204"We learn through direct experience; to accept a theory without experiencing it is to learn nothing at all." 204.

I fundamentally agree with the speaker’s first contention, for direct experience always gives you vivid impression, from which you can learn something valuable effectively. However, I strongly disagree with the second contention that we can learn nothing at all when we accept a theory without experiencing. Although this claim is not entirely without support, it runs contrary to common sense and general principal.

Admittedly, we can either learn or accept certain theory by putting it into practice. During the process of practicing, we gain our own experience, from which we can prove the truth of theory and even improve it. All of us knows this when we are trying to do well in writing, cooking, playing football or something like that. We know the instructions easily from books, reports or other’s words; but once we do it by ourselves, we find we do it much worse than what we imagined. Though the first practice is unsuccessful, we still gain some valuable experience which can help us to do better in the next time. Through the direct experience, we learn vividly and impressively. Just as the old saying, practice makes perfect. Practice brings experience, and then experience helps you learning and improving.

On the other hand, direct experience is not the only way to accept a theory or acquire knowledge. Firstly, it is impossible for us to experience everything with the confines of human technology and the limitation of ourselves. For instance, when Einstein established the most innovational theory in the 20th century, principle of relativity, many scientists try to improve this theory by constructing equipment which has the speed higher than light so that we can go back to history with its help. Unfortunately, none of the efforts was successful. But the failure that we cannot put the relativism into direct experience didn’t obstruct us to accept it for its precise and logical deduction. Most of us take in it and learn a lot such as mathematical method, physical background, creative thinking from it.

Secondly, there is no need for us to experience every theory before accepting and benefiting from it. Perhaps a cat knows the rule that no sooner its keeper rings the bell than it can enjoy its meal only by its own bodily experiencing. But human is definitely different from cats. Human have enough intelligence to accept a theory by words, reports, books and other abstractive forms. And they also have their judgment to decide whether to accept a theory by direct experience or indirect one. If he suspects the theory, he may take the former. Otherwise, he will take the latter, which can help him learn something more effectively. For instance, do you seriously think that you would go out without umbrella or something else when you mom told you it was raining just because you hadn’t experienced it personally? Especially, in our modern age when knowledge and technology increase rapidly, indirect experience is a basilica method to learn. There is no time for us to practice everything before we accept it.

In a conclusion, though it is true that we learn from direct experience, the assertion that we can not learn without experience is not only dogmatical but also irrational. In fact, most of us will choose one of them after judgment so that we can learn in a reliable and effective way.

Admittedly, we can either learn or accept certain theory by putting it into practice(top sentence? ).

However, I strongly disagree with the second contention that we can learn nothing at all when we accept a theory without experiencing. Although this claim is not entirely without support(unfounded是否更合适), it runs contrary to common sense and general principal(principle?).

Though(maybe) the first practice is unsuccessful,(but) we still gain some valuable experience which can help us to do better in the next time. Through the direct experience, we learn vividly and impressively(这句话好象和第二句重复).

For instance, when Einstein established the most innovational theory in the 20th century, principle of relativity, many scientists try to improve this theory by constructing equipment which has the speed higher than light so that we can go back to history(是否应该用the past) with its help. Unfortunately, none of the efforts was successful. But the failure that we cannot put the relativism into direct experience(the failure in putting relativity into direct experience) didn’t obstruct us to accept it for its precise and logical deduction.
(这个对比例子用得好)But human is definitely different from cats. Human have enough intelligence to accept a theory by words, reports, books and other abstractive forms. And they also have their judgment to decide whether to accept a theory by direct experience or indirect one. If he suspects the theory, he may take the former. Otherwise, he will take the latter, which can help him learn something more effectively.(人称代词怎么由they 换成了he?) For instance, do you seriously think that you would go out without umbrella or something else when you mom(GRE中应当用正式词!) told you it was raining just because you hadn’t experienced it personally? Especially, in our modern age when knowledge and technology increase rapidly, indirect experience is a basilica method to learn. There is no time for us to practice everything before we accept it. 你这里用了THEY, HE ,YOU

In a conclusion, though it is true that we learn from direct experience, the assertion that we can not learn without experience is not only dogmatical but also irrational. In fact, most of us will choose one of them after judgment so that we can learn in a reliable and effective way.

you,one,man,he等
