Is the video camera a more important form of documentation than written records because of its accuracy and convincing, as the speaker claims? I agree insofar that as a record of contemporary life video camera provides more objective and accurate visual images. However, there is far more to document in contemporary life than what we can see and hear. Therefore, the speaker diminishes the importance of written records, especially in the convenient and summary aspects.

As a documentary tool which can reproduce the sense to the life, the video camera could gave people more objective and visual feelings than written records in the spatial aspect. Consider the great moment, such as that Neil Armstrong’s step on the moon, Martin Luther King’s famous speech “I have a dream”, and Mike Jordan’s final score in NBA’s match, which could not be recounted in complete and objective detail by written records. However, video camera provides an image which sufficiently reappears these moments for us to help us awaken recollection and feel living atmosphere.

The growing documentary role the video camera plays in the memories of witnesses can also apply to many other realms. One needs look no further than that the video record used as the evidence, for instance, for justice to make judgment can justifiably reflects the complete situations of crime, such as those involving robbery and drug trafficking. Adding further credibility to the statement is that some argumentative judgments in athletic field affecting the result of a match could be substantiated by the video record. Thus, some unfair and argumentative matches’ results in old days caused by the lack of video memory could be avoided happening again.

However, the disadvantage of the video camera that it is not as convenient as written records cannot be ignored by the speaker. For some people, video cameras are not used as frequently as written records for the reason that cameras are too expensive, especially in the developing countries. Moreover, considering its weight and volume, we cannot take it with us as convenient as written records, resulting in that many memorial moments and matters cannot be recorded immediately. The time used for starting the camera also leads to that it is not better than paper record in aspect of timeliness.

Last but not the least, written record can make summarization of ideas, thoughts, emotion, interior feelings, constitute rules, regulation and laws, as well as generalize and emphasize the deepness of the record, while the video camera can do nothing with all of these. Consider some masterpieces in culture, art and science, of course, whose depth in thinking and reasoning could not be indicated by some simple images or videos. Yet words can give us deeper understanding and leave us larger space for imagination, in such respects video camera is of no use.

In sum, from what has been discussed above, we can get the conclusion that it is necessary for us to examine the significances of video cameras and written records from distinct angles. However, the speaker overstates the importance of cameras as documentary tool, and ignores written record’s effect in the respects of summarization and convenience.
