18 The well-being of a society is enhancedwhen many of its people question authority.
当很多人都质疑权威时,社会才会繁荣昌盛。
The authorities arethose who possess solitary discourse power in the specific fields they involve. This kind of power is always reasonable, due to their significant contributions and expertise in their own fields. However, there is a saying that if many people question the authorities, the society will be more prosperous. At least for me, I find such statement quite rational. To present my view point let me illustrate in details.
We should beginfirst to admit a truth that questioning the authorities make people continue toexplore the unknown and uncertainties, which enhance the perfection inintelligence and knowledge. No matter how wise a person is, he can onlyunderstand this world only in small part. The authorities, too, may grip alittle more truth in the fields they meditate for many years and contribute opinions that more valuable, but are confused and ignorance as us in most othercases. No one can boast to be omniscience. Inthe retrospect of history of human science and technology, we can easily seemthat a great deal of important improvement and innovations are made on thebasis of doubting, of challenges to authorities. A prominent example is inphysics, that Einstein constructed his relativity theory, asserting that Newton's classic mechanics are only a law under specificcondition. Thanks to the countless questionings like this in the history, thatwe human beings can closer to the truth and can give more accurate descriptions about the universe, which enable us to lead a more civilized and comfortable life.
Then, let me discusthis issue form another perspective. Even for winning human's right that theydeserve, the questioning the authorities have a fatal meaning. No one can keepthe monopoly might in truth, so it is in right. Through the oppugn for various object, including bishops, god, kings, presidents, ordinary people strive to seek for their own right, eitherin political or in economic, step by step. And these rights, in turn, act ascomplements for human systems and inevitably bring welfares. I still thank Jone Locke, a great thinker and philosopher, who doubtthe hereditary power of kings from god and summarize his conclusion in hismasterpiece<Two Treatises of Government>
Finally, I shouldsay that questioning the authorities is by no means the task of elites.Ordinary people also have the right and power to do such a thing, and theeffects are positive too. Many people can take part in questioning theauthorities, though they many hit the wrong points, for it is a essentialcharacteristic, that is, putting out criticism and doubts in public affairs, for highly quality citizens. By questioning, governments can improve theirservices and society has the force to upgrade. Furthermore, those citizens whoappear humble to the authorities are easily tamed as docile sheep in a totalitarian nation. The consequence of it, proved by historic experience,is always disastrous.
In summary, questioning authorities is not insulting or disgracing them, but helping usdiscern unknown things, consummate our system and keep critic sprit, all ofwhich propelling the well being of a society.
