To understand the most important characteristics of a society, one must study its major cities
The speaker claims that in order to understand the most important characteristics of a society, one must study its major cities. While I concede that major cities often possess several important societal traits, whether these cities should be the center of study entirely depends on how one defines “important characteristics”.
Surely major cities plays important roles in representing a society’s historical origin and cultural deposits. Since it is major cities where historic architectures and museums are maintained, a visit to these sites will develop an immediate and intuitional image of the whole society’s history and culture. When people talk about America, France or China, the Statue of Liberty, the Eiffel Tower and the Great Wall, immediately comes to mind. These landmarks are located in New York, Paris and Beijing respectively, all of which are famous major cities.
Major cities also represents the highest achievement in economy and technology of a society. Being the breeding ground for investment banks and large enterprises, major cities are replete with jobs and opportunities, which significantly boost the economic development of the whole society. The Wall Street in New York, where hundreds of thousands of global trades and stock exchanges take place every day, is not only the business center of United States, but also the heart of the global economy. Also notable is the technology achievement is these cities. Equipped with the finest infrastructure and technology in medical care, communication and transportation, major cities provide an instant indicator of the latest advancement in technology.
However, major cities may be less helpful when it comes to traditional culture of a society. Admittedly, museums and galleries serve to preserve and display a society’s most representative traditional culture, the real traditional cultural heritages, such as folk art, crafts and customs, may nevertheless rest in small towns and cities. Actually, major cities are more likely to be described as multicultural hodgepodge rather than basis for native traditional culture. Cities in different nations are getting more convergent and indistinguishable on latest fashion and popular culture due to the globalization of culture and economy. As a result, one may be surprised to discover a lack of disparity between a coffee shop in a downtown street of Shanghai and a Starbuck in Manhattan.
Moreover, when such characteristic as general welfare is concerned, a narrow sight on major cities can sometimes cause serious bias and misconception. The 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and 2010 Shanghai Expo attracted myriads of tourists and investors from other nations, and many of those who marvel at these flourishing cities often mistake them as the real image of the entire nation. Yet what is rarely noted and mentioned is the poverty-stricken rural areas where migrant workers flow to cities for jobs and children are provided with inadequate opportunities for education. The remarkable annual growth in GDP is nothing but a misleading illusion, because obviously the prosperity of major cities does not necessarily guarantee the general well-being of a society.
Therefore, for those who want to develop an overall understanding of a society, a study confined to major cities is clearly insufficient. In fact, a society is a comprehensive and complex entity where any limited focus on certain specific locations may bring inaccurate and incomplete perception.
