刚刚完成申请，感慨很多的。希望以下的帖子抛砖引玉。

我申请ME(Mechanical Engineering)，申请的过程如下：
1对照《Top 50 Engineering Schools 2004》、《全美250所大学排名》等资料。根据学校名称、排名、地点选择出一个，然后在Google里面查，一般Google列出的第一个网站就是。

2进入学校主页，首先查找学校有没有我的专业。并提供PHD学位。
选择Academic菜单或者子栏目Colleges, schools & programs，找Enginneering College，进入Enginneering College页面以后查找Mechanical Engineering专业。就知道了。
我很惊讶美国的学校的主页的栏目名称惊人的类似，就像有一个标准一样。不会让我这样的人到处乱找一气。

3如果需要申请。从首页上的Prospective Students或者Admission就可以找到。可以网上申请，也可以寄信申请。网上申请快捷，但是一般要立即用信用卡支付申请费。网上申请，我也遇到过很不好用的时候，比如，申请Texas的学校，统一由一个网站进行，其中要求对我所上过的大学查出一个号码来，才可以。我读研的大学很没有名气，或者就是我的英文名称翻译不准确。反正就是查不出来。无法进入下一步。只好下载申请表格，打印填写。后来我发现还是用传统的方式申请节省时间。并且把几张纸寄过去也不会多化几块钱。只是晚报到半个月。

4关于申请费，现在涨价得厉害，25$最便宜，40$算一般，不少是50$，75$。 University of Nevada Reno 居然要95$，搞得我不敢申请。

5 关于寄申请材料，大家可能都喜欢UPS（据说起价50～60），也有用EMS的，起价180。如果申请10多所学校，那要多化不少钱。我建议，提前寄材料，就用平信，连挂号也免了。一封信15元左右，我的几封信超重，大约30多。也是可以承受的。

6 在申请的时候，如果有10多所学校，不注意整理，会千头万绪，弄个乱七八糟。我的方法是建立一个word文档。每一个学校列出<1>学校名称、排名、所在地址、申请的college名称以及专业<2>网上申请的网址或者下载申请表格的地址。<3>申请费金额，以及在网上申请的时候，是否已经用信用卡支付。<4>寄送申请材料的地址，有的学校要求一部分资料寄到Graduate School,一部分寄到系里面。（这种很讨厌）。有的要求全部寄到Graduate School。另外，看看学校是否要求多寄几个Copy。（准备超重吧）。<5>还没有寄的材料，如申请费、Fiancial Statement等。

这样边申请的时候，可以做到一幕了然。申请学校是一件非常辛苦的事情，申请一个一般要化3个小时，寻找这些资料，下载填表。看学校的申请说明。以及特殊要求。判断是否值得选择。需要一种能力，就是在大量的英文资料面前速读，找到有用的材料。可以先慢慢申请一个两个的，然后就有经验了。因为学校的申请说明大同小异。

8 我在申请以前看到过这样的帖子，“德州的学校,要三思,TAMU和UT-A虽然很有名,但是,1.给的钱少! 2.要交5000/年的州内学费!5000诶!自己交诶!杀人诶.....”
害得我见到德州的学校就避开。

其实在申请的时候，我发现有不少的州都是这样收费的。美国的学生跨州读书都要交额外的费用。何况外国的学生呢。至于哪些州不这样收费，我没有留意。所以德州的学校还是可以申请的。

有不少的学校的申请表格里面无法体现发表过的论文和获奖情况。这些表格着重体现的是你上过正规的四年大学而已。我建议增加一些个性的东西，自己额外提供一些资料，应该好一些，至少没有坏处。体现如：
<1发表过的文章清单，摘要，期刊名称，格式如下：
[TITLE]:论文题目第几作者完成时间多少页
[ABSTRACT]:
[Key Words]:
[Periodical]: 登载文章的论文名称，发表时间，页码
<2在校时奖学金和荣誉证书
<3工作的时候，参与的项目，项目的意义，自己的体会等
<4读硕士期间助教或者带本科生做实验和研写毕业论文情况
<5工作的时候，带领新毕业的本科生熟悉环境和一起参与项目研究的情况。以及自己在研究室里面和其它成员之间协同、配合完成一些重要项目的情况。
<6自己的爱好，如围棋、上网等

9 我在申请的时候找到的一个印度学生的PS，真的很流畅。从小学英语就是好。

My name is Natraj Iyer and I am a Graduate student in Mechanical Engineering. As a member of the Centre for Information Systems in Engineering, I investigate the use of Information Technology in Engineering. More precisely, I explore large engineering systems oriented problems that have convergent technologies and include Information Technology as a key component. I work at the interfaces of engineering and computer science.

My interests are in Design Informatics, Bioinformatics, Design and Manufacturing. Currently as more and more information is being generated, we are finding it difficult to manage and retrieve relevant knowledge. Retrieval and management of design and manufacturing information will continue to be an emerging area. I believe that mechanical design systems of the future will use newer and novel computing methodologies such as DNA computing and Quantum computing.

As part of my Ph.D. dissertation research, I am involved in developing a 3D engineering shape search system. The motivation behind this project is to discover knowledge in distributed design repositories through searching for similar 3D parts. A 3D model is reduced to a simplified representation which captures the user’s notion of the most essential shape features. Retrieval of similar shapes is based on this representation. I work with two MBA students to identify business opportunities presented by my research as part of the Innovation Realization Laboratory at Krannert Graduate School of Management.

My Masters thesis (also in Mechanical Engineering) focused on characterization of an aluminum alloy developed by Alcoa. It was found that the new aluminum alloy produced consistently lower temperatures in the mold and was able to reduce sink marks in plastic parts. Cycle times were also reduced by as much as 30 percent. Consequently, Alcoa launched the new alloy successfully.

I worked for a year at the Industrial Design Centre, IIT Bombay, India in the capacity of a Research Engineer. I was involved in numerous projects (academic and industry) related to Solid Modeling, Rapid Prototyping and Rapid Tooling. I gained significant knowledge in the areas of Product Design and Rapid Product Development.

I obtained my B.E. in Production Engineering from the University of Bombay, India. As part of my final year thesis project, I developed a springback compensation system for a busbar bending machine. This involved experiments to measure springback while bending copper and aluminum busbars. The springback of the busbars was measured real-time and a computer algorithm suggested the degree of re-bending required. Errors in busbar bending reduced by more than 40 percent.

I was born in Thane, about 35 kms. from Bombay in India. I attended St. John the Baptist High School (Thane) until Grade X. Later I went to V.G. Vaze College (also in Bombay) to complete Grade XII. I secured admission at V.J. Technical Institute which is the one of the premier engineering institutions within the University of Bombay.

My non-academic interests are Traveling, Cricket, Vegetarianism and Music. I have also been learning German. Lately, I have also been attracted by Comparative Religion, Biomimicry and Vision Perception.
