In general, I agree with the speaker that education does encourage students to question and criticize. It seems that it will not promote or even block the harmony of the society, Because in most people’s opinion,the most important factors to promote the social harmony should be forgiveness,tolerance and comprehension,not questioning and criticizing.However,in my point of view, I agree with the conclusion that the education does a lot to promote social harmony even it encourages students to question and criticize.
What’s the purpose of education?Does it only tell students to question and criticize?Of course not.The most important aim of education is to teach students knowledge,and tell them how to be a good man of the modern society. And questioning and criticizing are just the scientific methods for students to study and gain information.They are not all of education. Further more, are questioning and criticizing always wrong or unreasonable? If the question or criticism are made based on the scientific research and investigation, we should believe that the question or criticism is correct. And that will be a progress of the society. Without the spirit of questioning and criticizing, we may still believe that the earth is the center of the universe, which had dominated the thought of western country’s people for more than 1500 years.
In modern society, to each country,the most essential power to promote the social progress are the development of science and the training of bright people, on which the social harmony depends. On one hand, the development of science needs questioning and criticizing. And these are the necessary attitude of the scientists of our society. Take Galileo for instance, in 15th century he had make experience to prove that the Aristotle’s theory which believed things with different weight would decline in different speed was wrong .If he didn’t question Aristotle’s authority, many modern scientific theories could not be found. On the other hand, the spirit of questioning and criticizing is the most important quality of a person of ability. Without this character,he/she will never make any new discovery or creation. Francis Bacon said(and I paraphrase):”If a man will begin with certainties, he shall end in doubts ;but if he will be content to begin with doubts, he shall end in certainties. ”
What’s more ,with the development of the globalization, the harmony of our society not only means the people of each country living in harmony but also requires different peoples and cultures being in harmony.And with questioning and criticizing, different peoples and cultures can understand each other step by step, and finally be received by all the people of the world.Thus the social harmony will be promoted.
In conclusion, questioning and criticizing are not only the requirement of education,but also the demand of the development of the society. With the growth of the education, more and more people will own the spirit of rational questioning and criticizing, which will accelerate the progress of the science and speed up the comprehension of the people of different nations or cultures all over the world, and finally promote the harmony of our global society.
