171  “People who pursue their own intellectual interests for purely personal reasons are more likely to benefit the rest of the world than are people who try to act for the public good.”

Who would more likely to benefit our society, the people pursuing their own intellectual interests for purely personal reason or the people trying to act for the public good?  The author asserts that the former would do more contribution to the rest of the world rather than the later do.  As far as I am concerned, I agree that people who pursue their own intellectual interests would always benefit our society, but it is crucial that they should embrace the goodwill to the world.  At the same time, the people who try to act for the public good also have a large possible to benefit the rest of the world.

In the first place, the development is gradual.  It is a common sense that people would be eager to pursue their own profit (physical and psychosocial) for person reason, which sometimes can be present as the pursuing people’s own intellectual interests.  Through the individuals’ pursuing of profit and creative activities, the welfare of the whole society would have the possible to increase correspondingly.  We can see in the science, because the scientist researching a subject for personal interests, and thus he would devote all his energy and time to the research then finally he would be more possible to come to a great discovery.  For example, Archimedes, Greek mathematician, engineer, and physicist, who was favorite math and devoted most he life to research.  Among the most important intellectual figures of antiquity, he discovered formulas for the area and volume of various geometric figures, and discovered the principle of buoyancy, which achieved most because he was pursuing his interest.  Another example is Columbus, who was interested in the east and believed in that “the earth is round”, he insisted that go straightforward to the west would be certain to arrive the east.  Supported by the prince of Spanish, he navigated west by 1492, and finally arrived at America which unfortunately he supposed as Indian.  The interests’ pursuing made Columbus finds the new land of America.

Second, the people who try to act for the public good could also make progress to our society.  It is true that at most situations people research for solving problems which need the researchers’ devotion to benefit the rest of the world.  For example, in the Revolutionary War, Washington, the first President of the United States, command the American force and won the independence of USA which was contributed to his devotion of won America independence.  Another example is Lincoln, who led the Union during the Civil War and emancipated slaves in the South.  The success was at the will of abolish slavery which also a conviction to act for public good.  When we do our effort to develop economy, improve environment condition, investigate to other planets, it is all because the goodwill of benefit the world and it would promote the progress of society.

Finally, both can do well to the rest of the world, and it is important that the interests’ people pursuing should not be wicked.  It is unimaginable that a medical scientist pursuing interest only for making a clone man to provoke a terrible war.  I think it is hard to say whether interests or trying to act for the public good would do more benefit to society, but it would be sure that pursuing interests would be control at a proper level.

In sum, the development of our world sometimes achieved from individuals’ pursuing their profits while sometimes would be gain from the effort of people who try to act for the public good.  All in a word, goodwill is crucial!
