Is reading not as important as it used to be and will it be substituted by TV at last?  The speaker contends so, I agree that the TV is playing an important role in people's daily life, however, reading as a major way of learning is equally important to people.

Admittedly, TV has its own advantage in passing on information. It is quite suitable for little children to learn knowledge because of its vivid pictures. After all, concrete images are more interesting than letters or characters. Moreover, it can quickly pass on abundant of information to the people all over the world ---- effectiveness of which is much higher to books. You only have to sit before the TV and get the first hand information you are interested in. With TV programs such as “the National Geographic" or "Discovery",  you are able to visit places of interest you have no chance to go in your whole life and experience adventure you will not have in the real world. It is so amazing that the people in tropics are able to see the alabaster and pure world in Arctic.

Nonetheless, watching TV can not become the major way of learning because its main function is to entertain people . In America, roughly 97 percent programs are for entertainment because most TV programs are profit-based. In order to get the high profit, TV organizations would like to make programs to meet the interests of people no matter what their desires are. Soap operas are among these programs which are very popular now. It indeed can relax people and extricate people from a day's heavy work. Yet too much time spending on it is undoubtedly to be a waste of time. Many other programs about sex or violence are also completely open to all the population----including the children. For the children who are not matured enough and easily  affected by the outside world sometimes can not resist such kinds of temptations and thus indulge in it, which do harm to the children’s mental health and give rise to crime.

At the same time, watching can not be as effective as reading in learning and reading which has always been the main way to study will remain play the paramount role for people to learn. Firstly, it leaves us little time to think when watching. As we climb the higher ladder of study, we need more time to think the abstruse problem. When reading we not only have more time but also we can note our opinions in the blank of the book which can help us to make a better understanding. Secondly, books are convenient to carry and do not need power. We can learn anytime anywhere by reading. Thirdly, imaging that if we learn all things by watching, the result would be horrible------we lose the basic ability of writing and we can not disseminate our knowledge to our later generations----we can not make all the new theory into TV programs.

In sum, we can not exaggerate the role of TV because it is inferior to reading in some critical aspects as mentioned above. We should make good use of it to better people's life and books should continue to be the best "teachers" of human.
