------题目------
Such nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role in society by satisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science.
------正文------
I fundamentally agree with the speaker that no mainstream areas of inquiry such as astrology and so on do play a vital role in society. For example, astrology, the study of how events on earth corresponded to the position and movements of astronomical bodies, was popular in classic China, Greece, Rome and Islamic Middle East. Although astrological and astronomy go their separate ways during the 1500s, as late as the 17th century many Europeans consulted astrologers to calculate the fate of an imminent wedding or a sign of illness. Although for many years, scientists have rejected the principals of astrology, millions of people continue to believe in or practice it. Another example is torture-telling which is the practice of predicting the future through psychic means, such as the interpretation of signs of communication with supernatural forces. Many people use astrology as a method of fortune-telling. Other method includes palmistry, the practice of interpreting the lines in hand; cartomancy, the prediction of future using special cards such as tarot cards. Fortune-telling also has little support in science, it remains popular in many countries, including the United States.

Why are such nonmainstream areas of research  so popular with the people even though they are supported by little scientific evidence? What is more, they are rejected as the false science by mainstream science. In my opinion, it the functions that make them unique.

Firstly, nonmainstream areas of inquiry meet the curiosity that humans have about the future. Human have long been interested in predicting the future. They have practiced various forms of fortune-telling for thousands of yeas. It became a widespread practice in many ancient societies, practically among rulers, who often sought advices from fortune-tellers. In ancient China, for example, emperors had court astrologers and special diviners, who predict the future using a set of sticks called the Ching. In ancient Rome, special priests, called augers predicted the future by interpreting certain sign in nature. The ancient Greeks consulted oracles that supposedly learned of future by speaking directly with the gods.

Secondly, human being sought for consolation from nonmaistram areas which can not offered by mainstream areas. In ancient times, the technology was not so advanced that some of the phenomena in nature could not explained by mainstream areas, thus the people sought answer by fortune-telling and so on. For example, the moon eclipse was regards as the result that a dog swallows the moon. For another, when the relatives of someone died, he or she was so sad that he or she tried to seek comfort from these nonmainsteam areas.

But here there exists one point that should be take into consideration is once used improperly, the areas of nonmainstream can do harm to our society. One obvious example is the Law-Wheel in China, which caused tumult in many peoples including intelligentsia. Because some of them wanted to sought consolation via using this Law-Wheel, so they indulged in the superstition which cause a tumult in China. Nonmainsteam areas are like the superstitions if they are misused. Once someone is addicted to it, he or she can not find way out of it. The government took actions to ban those activities involving Law-Wheel. Thus, we human being had the ability to control our future with the development of technology and science, so the existence of such nonmanstream areas id based on the inadequacy of the science. If we can explain all the phenomena in the nature, so these nonmanstream areas of inquiry will disappear.

In all, the no mainstream areas of inquiry are the products of inadequacy of our science; they play an important role in the ancient times. The less important they will be the more advanced the science is. Thus, it is reasonable for these nonmaistream areas to exist for the functions they act. But all these functions should be guided; otherwise, they may cause problems.
