Issue185: Scandals—whether in politics, academia, or other areas—can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could.

Scandals usually attract a lot of people; on the contrary, are criticized by most people at the same time.  Then, are scandals defined as useful?  In my opinion, scandals may perform in a way which cannot be accessible by speakers and reformers; however, too much emphasis on scandals will also cover our eyes.

Scandals always spread faster, are closer to the essence of the fact and attract people's great consideration.  It is said that good words do not come out, while ill words spread a long distance.  Nowadays, the communication means and press media are developing fast, which result in the case that scandals spread at a significant speed.  We are able to know the ill things, no matter official or unofficial, national or international, through internet, newspapers, TV news and even a call from our friends and relatives.  Also the big titles are likely to catch our eyes at the first time.  We are inevitably informed the scandals, which make a large impression on our minds.

Moreover, scandals will also disclose some flaws of the intendance and evaluation systems.  In other words, scandals help to improve the function of these systems and prevent some certain corruptions, although in a disagreeable and passive way.  However, people may not know the backside without scandals.  For example, once Nobel Prize made a terrible mistake that offered the Chemistry Prize to the one who had cheated in his experiment and research, which made many people astonished later.  The exposure of the mistake, however, urged the council of Nobel Prize to concern the function of rewarding.  Thus, they are more careful now about the rewarding and will spend a relatively longer time to inspect the candidates.

However, if we focus too much on scandals, we are unlikely to pick up the main aspects of the fact.  As no one can avoid making mistakes, we may not always only see the darkest of one thing, while ignore the best aspect, just like the case that we do not enjoy the beautiful scenery but focus on a small piece of paper on the ground.  An obvious example is the case of the previous President Bill Clinton.  The sex scandal of Clinton and Monica Lewinsky, which spread quickly, is revealed to all and criticized by people on the earth.  However, the council failed to recognize the feat that Clinton had established, such as the lowest unemployment and poverty and the longest period of economic growth in decades.
The series of activities against Clinton had cost a large sum of money, which, however, made no real improvement.

In conclusion, scandals are the reflect of the backsides of the society on one hand which can always inform the people directly and effectively.  On the other hand, scandals will also cause a lot of other effects opposite to the main aspects and main stream of the society, which can be ignored and omitted.  Thus, it is of vital importance to select the useful information from scandals and evaluate its importance and authenticity.
