Issue 185 Scandals—whether in politics, academia, or other areas—can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could.
提纲：1、丑闻是在最短时间内引起公众注意，发现潜在问题的重要手段
   2、当丑闻被人们利用是，人们就具有了和丑闻一样的能力在最短时间内达到他们的目标
   3、有些新闻媒体的夸张报道往往会是人们仅注意丑闻本身，而忽略了丑闻所具有的潜在价值
There is a debate over scandals for a long time. Are they devil that will damage people’s life or a useful tool that focus people’s attention on problems in ways that no speaker of reformer ever could? As far as I am concerned, it is true that scandals will reveal some deficits in operating systems of the society.However, because of the overstating report of media, people might pay too much attention to the scandal itself, but ignore the social problems behind it. Morevoer, it is too hasty to state that the way in which scandals attract people’s attention cannot be done by any speaker or reforemer.

Admittedly, scandal sometimes is an effective way of attract people’s attention in almost the shortest time, which make it possible for people to discover the existed problems behind the scandal. People, after being astonished by the scandal, will naturally want to search for the direct cause and fundamental reason for it,which provides people the opportunity to discover the potential problem of the society.For instance, after the scandal about a professor in Korea cheating in his thesis with several students was revealed by media, it quickly attracted the whole world’s attention and caused a big discussion about the problems existing in managing system of academic field.Therefore, due to its astonishing nature,scandal can often successfully focuses people’s  attention on some problems in almost the shortest time.

However, some reports of scandals may also distort the fact, which may in some extent mask the potential problems. Because media is only channel through which people can learn about the scandal, media report thus in some sense will determine people’s opinion towards it. For high rate of viewers, some reporters may overstate the event to reach the sensation effect but ignore to probe the problem that lie behind the scandal.And,viewers’ attitude towards an event, in some sense,is directed by media.If media just views scandal as a piece of surprising news but does not notice its potential meanings, then viewers may also ignore its value.

Moreover, it is too arbitrate to state that the way in which scandal attains its sensation effect cannot be used by any speaker or reformer, because in many cases scandal itself is an useful tool for those speakers or reformers to reach their aims, accordingly, the same way can also be adopted by people.In games of politics, it is not unusual for people to exploit the scandals to focus public’s attention and beat their adversaries.Nixon had been assailed by his adversaries for “Watergate Event”, and Clinton has also been placed into dilemma by his opponents for his affairs with Monica Lewinsky. Reformer, as a politician, is often familiar with how to take advantage of the scandal to reach supposed effect.Sometimes they even spend a great amount of money to dig further in their adversaries personal lives in hope of acquiring scandals that can be exploited. Therefore, once scandals are utilized as tools, their special ability to attract the society’s attention is also owned by people who use it to reach their aims.

In sum,we should admit that in some cases scandals are indeed an effective channel for people being aware of the problems of the society.However, when people regard this channel as a useful tool, in fact they have this channel’s ability to attract people in ways which are often used by scandals. Furthermore, overstating reports of media may also distort this channel, thus lead people to a false direction to trap themselves merely in the scandal, but ignore those potential problems behind them.
