Should the superficial image be superior to the essence in the contemporary society? The speaker claims so. While in some respects, it has considerable merit. I concede that an appealing image will easily attract persons, and will make people feel comfortable. But, in my view, for a long-term reputation, the reality and the truth will ultimately defeat the superficial things.

Although most people know that the reality or truth in the rear is more crucial than the appearance, the beautiful and voguish superficial image is gradually pursued by more and more people, especially young teenagers. The most obvious evidence is the advertisements flooding the street corner. For example, Adidas, an international sports corporation, produce many famous sports products such as soccer shoes, T-shirts and so forth. In the new advertisement the leading role is a child Jose. To play a football game, he and his partner call on several celebrated soccer stars, such as Zidane, Kaka, Beckham and Roberto Carlos. After enjoying the wonderful game in the advertisement, I am sure many of the children will want to buy Adidas shoes so that they are more like and close to those sports stars. Hence, the Adidas brand is more and more popular due to its successful advertisement.

Even in the political realm, nowadays, politicians, who spend more time than ever before on the propaganda before the president election, and devote them to consider how to show profound impression to the public. Besides, people are also likely to watch their fond politicians. In terms of people's view, propaganda is more important than the policy and laws in reality to politicians

The phenomenon, which I mentioned above, is result of many factors. Firstly, to most people, before the profound and further investigation, which they should do, to the things they concerned, the impression of the superficial image comes first to them. So the products with appealing images will catch more attention from consumers than those normal products. Secondly, the rhythm of life, becoming faster and faster, lets people having less time to place further consideration on the products of which they are fond. Thus, ultimately, people gradually start to choose products using their intuition, not considering products’ function. In the political realm, candidates, in order to win the final election, place more attention on the citizen's psychology, not on the direction of nation’s development.

However, no matter how they care the images, in terms of long-term development, the reality or the truth is the genuine determinant. In the business realm, taking the IBM for example, the IBM has remained its black image for years, and never intended to change. IBM's success is result of its products' quality not superficial image. The determinant factor, to people to be an independent and powerful individual, is the inherent character not the superficial things. For instance, Florence Nightingale, born in Florence, Italy, who was idolized by the troops and the public as the "Lady with the Lamp", is best remembered for her work as a nurse during the Crimean War and her contribution towards the reform of the sanitary conditions in military field hospitals. Therefore, from these cases, we can see the essence is more important to everything than the superficial images.
In sum, an appealing image, in certain situation, particularly in nowadays, plays an important role to win the competition in the areas of commerce and politics, and will bring to people short-term benefits. On the contrary, for the long-term reputation, the reality and truth behind the image will take the superior position.
