TOPIC: ARGUMENT142 - The article entitled 'Eating Iron' in last month's issue of Eating for Health reported that a recent study found a correlation between high levels of iron in the diet and an increased risk of heart disease. Further, it is well established that there is a link between large amounts of red meat in the diet and heart disease, and red meat is high in iron. On the basis of the study and the well-established link between red meat and heart disease, we can conclude that the correlation between high iron levels and heart disease, then, is most probably a function of the correlation between red meat and heart disease.

In the argument, the author concludes that the link between high iron levels and heart disease may be a most possible function of the correlation between red meat and heart disease. Yet, close scrutiny on the evidence reveals it renders little credible support of the conclusion.

To begin with, the premise of the conclusion is dubious. The author provides scant evidences about the premise of the conclusion, that the link between the red meat and heart disease. He/she does not offer any data, report, and survey about the precede premise. How can the author reach a reliable conclusion without all these fundamental materials for the science research? Beside, the author renders no information about the certain integrant which may cause heart disease, as well as giving no possible way that how to cook the red meat may bring harm to our health. With out all these basic evidences, the premise of the conclusion can not be ensured.

Moreover, even if the correlation between the red meat and the heart disease can be ensured, it does not mean that we would pose the risk of heart disease if we eat large amount of red meat. As we know, many integrant can be hardly absorb by our body even we overly eat them, such as vitamin, which can hardly absorb by the human, and it would be excreted out our body if they overly eat them. So, perhaps, the iron in the red meat is just like the vitamin, which can not be absorbed. So, the conclusion remains unreliable.

Finally, given that the forgoing premises are assured substantiated, the author rests on the assumption that the high iron levels in the red meat cause the heart disease unreliable. The author mentions that the high levels of iron in diet has a connection with the heart disease. As we all know, we eat a lot of other food except the red meat, such as fish and vegetable. It is entirely possible that a lot of vegetable as well as some fish also have a high iron level, therefore, they can also cause the heart disease to some extant. Moreover, it is also possible other integrant in the meat would cause the disease. As we all know, the red meats have a high level of fat, which may cause people fat and even increase the risk of the heart disease. The conclusion remain dubious.

In sum, the conclusion is unconvincing as it stands, more sophisticated and substantiated survey should be taken before reaching a more forceful and reliable conclusion.
