TOPIC: ISSUE208 - "The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people."
WORDS:497(515) TIME: 0:45:00 DATE: 2007-4-15
I agree that we can tell much about a society's ideas and value from an individual's dress and behaviors. However, we should realize that the connection between the different nations growing increase, therefore, we should not regard the appearance and behaviors as the only way to judge a society's ideology, since the people worldwide become more and more similar.
An compelling argument in favor of the judgment which observe the appearance and behavior of the individuals, has to do with the fact that the people's dress can insofar as a mirror of the certain society. An apt contrary is the disparity between the people from Arab and America. The Americans prefer some casual and relaxing apparel such as the jeans or T-shirt which reveals their extrovert racial character and the open social environment. However, considering the Arab's apparel, they wear the black clothes and veil especially their women. We can not see anything but the eyes from their appearance-those features reflect the significant role the religious doctrines play in their daily life. So, to some extent, we can know something about a certain ideas and value system from the individuals' certain apparel.
Another compelling function is that from observing the behavior of the people, we can distinguish the different nations. Consider the differences between the westerners and easterners. Americans like to hug when they meet a friend, while the Chinese like to shake hands. Japanese often work till late night, while the Europeans often like to live a casual life. The divergent people from the different country have some life styles which can be found from some behaviors even some details. A telling example is the people from china and Japan. The two races have the same black hair and eyes as well as having the same yellow skin. However, the two races can be easily distinguished from their behaviors. The Japanese like obeisance when they make a mistake, or thank to others, and so forth, but neither do the Chinese. Therefore, the behaviors can also reflect a society.
However, we find the appearance and behaviors can not be the only and most accurate way to reveals everyone’s different attitudes and interests. An apt example is the minority people in America. They born in America and speak English as well as having many same behaviors, such as they hug when they meet their friend and like the America popular culture, with the majority in the USA. However, the minority and majority are different in the basic value systems, ideologies, the ways of thinking, since they have the different history, culture, and even religious brief. Such as the Chinese in America still celebrate the spring festival, and believe the traditional Confucius words. Therefore, we can not simply regard the appearance and behaviors as the only way to judge a society.
In sum, an individual's dress and behaviors has its merit to tell something about a society's ideas and value, while we can not ignore the other key fact, the history, the traditional culture, the current development and the like, to distinguish a society, more comprehensive.
