TOPIC: ISSUE88 - "Technologies not only influence but actually determine social customs and ethics."

Facing the technological innovations that continuously emerged, people are becoming more confused about the relationship between technologies and social customs and ethics. As the speaker claims, technologies influence social customs and ethics much. However, social customs and ethics are impacted by many other factors, including culture, politics and economy, and mostly remain the same with their inherence during a long history.

Admittedly, technology, at a certain extent, affects the development of social customs and ethics. With making many great contributions, technologies change the way of people to live, consequentially leading to some positive or negative influence to social customs and ethics. Taking a ancient Chinese sacrifice for rain as granted, it was a very important custom directed by leading people to plea the deity against the drought. But the age-old custom has turned into a traditional activity without former aims, because we can use modern technology to forecast when it will rain and even can make an artificial rain when the drought happens. Another good example is about the research of human cloning technology, which results in a serious discussion in moral realm all over the world. It firstly brings some new problems whether we should treat the clonal human beings without parents equally as us real humans, or whether it is legal to use the organs of those clones in order to rescue the patients for organ transplant. This kind of technology also causes us to remodify our rules of ethics. Thus, no one could ignore the big influence on social customs and ethics by technological advancement.

Notwithstanding, not only technologies but also many other important factors make effect on social customs and ethics. Firstly, culture is a main impact to the development of social customs and ethics. Many values in morality in different nations base on their own different cultures. For example, the oriental always treat humility as a favorable behavior while the westerners are more likely to exhibit their capacity confidently and bravely, according to difference between two traditional cultures. In addition, political and economic factors also play a crucial role in forming social customs and ethics. Thanksgiving Day, an important holiday in the United States, has an original aim to celebrate the harvest. If there were not those new immigrants from England for some political and religious reasons, who would exploit uncultivated land in the North America and create such a holiday to thanks the nature and help from native Indians? Influenced by these many factors mentioned above, social customs and ethics develop gradually following the wheels of history.

Although social customs and ethics are influenced by technologies, cultures, politics and economy, their mainstream mostly remain the same determined by their inherence. As we all know, the development of social customs and ethics is a complicated process which could be backward to the ancient times when society was firstly formed. The good nature of human beings is the essential basis of social customs and ethics. So many virtues, such as honesty, braveness and fairness, are invariable and accepted commonly by any nationality in all ages.

In sum, technologies, together with cultures, politics and economy, influence social customs and ethics in both positive and negative directions. Nevertheless, the essence of social customs and ethics remains unchangeable as time goes by, which are leading all human beings to the bright future.
