TOPIC: ARGUMENT167 - A folk remedy* for insomnia, the scent in lavender flowers, has now been proved effective. In a recent study, 30 volunteers with chronic insomnia slept each night for three weeks on lavender-scented pillows in a controlled room where their sleep was monitored. During the first week, volunteers continued to take their usual sleeping medication. They slept soundly but wakened feeling tired. During the second week, the volunteers discontinued their medication. As a result, they slept less soundly than the previous week and felt even more tired. During the third week, the volunteers slept longer and more soundly than in the previous two weeks. This shows that over a short period of time lavender cures insomnia.

*A folk remedy is usually a plant-based form of treatment common to traditional forms of medicine, ones that developed before the advent of modern medical services and technology.

By observation of the responds of paints in the successive three weeks with different treatment, the author concludes that the lavender can cure insomnia in a short time. However, owing to the absence of simultaneously reference and objective measurements to weigh the effect, the author's conclusion is unpersuasive.

Firstly, the effect of each treatment is based on the responds of patients themselves, which is dubious. As we know, people's judgments on themselves are quite subjective and have much to do with their mental states. If, for example, they believe the treatment will take effect, they might respond a better state when they wake up the next day, however this might only due to that they lure themselves into a fact that the treatment of lavender will work while the real state remained unchanged. So the author should bring in more objective measurement to exactly estimate the condition of sleep.
Even if we concede the responds from patients are objective, the experiment lacks convincible references so that the conclusion is dubious. Firstly, although in the third week patients state that they slept longer and more soundly, we are not sure whether the time between the first week and the third week is long enough to exclude the remaining effect of sleeping medication. Maybe after taking this medicine for a week, in the third week, it still works but the side effect does not come that fierce so that patients feel much better. What's more, even if the effect of the sleeping medicine is excluded, there might be other possibilities. We know that patients of insomnia are sensitive to their sleeping environment, maybe in the first week they were not used to the conditions there, but after two weeks adaptation, they are costumed to the environment and therefore appeared to sleep more soundly.
Last but not the least, even if lavender has certain effect on curing insomnia, we can not hastily come to the conclusion that it can cure insomnia. Firstly, insomnia is a chronic illness that might last for quit a long time, then the effectiveness of only a week might be unpersuasive. It is possible if patients use lavender for a long time, when people are used to it, this treatment would be less effective as it initially was. What's more, even if people who are using this treatment have a good effect, we can not say that lavender can cure it. Cure, means making patients back to the normal conditions. However, we get no information about how the patients would feel if they sleep without the lavender pillows. It is possible that after one-week's treatment, when people sleep without it, they still suffer from insomnia, in this case, lavender just help patients sleep soundly, rather than cure it.

In conclusion, owing to the flaws we have discussed above, the author's statement is  not persuasive. To make the result more convincible, the author's experiment need a simultaneously reference for the three stages of it; the time for experiment should be necessarily longer; and we should collect more information about the responds of patients after the treatment. Only after these actions can the autor's statements be reasonable.
