TOPIC: ISSUE38 - "In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."

Is reading books not as important as it once was during the age of television? I partially agree the speaker's opinion that people can choose watching television as the channel to gain the knowledge. However, television cannot instead of books to show the deeper meaning and knowledge which hide in the practical pictures. Therefore, in my opinion, people should learn knowledge by both watching television and reading books.

To begin with, reading books is still an important method to learn the knowledge in the age of television. In the reality world, the knowledge are so complex that cannot be understood only though learning or rebuilding the surface of them in the most time, and they also are not defined as a simple picture which can be recorded by camera and present though the television. If people want to understand knowledge deeper and better, he or she must read books, recorded the real meaning of the knowledge, to find out the deeper meaning hidden in the literal definition. For instance, we all learn science and technology, such as physics and math, by studying the books in the school. Our teachers usually explain the definitions in these books to help us to gain the truly and essential meaning. Yet they do not just use the television to educate us, because they know watching television is useless for understanding hidden meanings.

In addition, reading book can improve our reading and imaging abilities which are useful and necessary for our daily lives and works. In the modern society, any kind of work cannot be completed successfully without reading abilities. For example, the financial reports and projects' reports are all shown though letters and sentences, if we do not have enough reading abilities to understand the meaning of these reports, we cannot achieve our goals and complete our work effective. On the other hand, the imaging abilities, the other ability gained from reading books, can help us have some brilliant ideas about our work, which can give us the great opportunities to become successful in our work. A telling example is about Nash who is the most famous mathematician in the word, he use his all time to read and understand the masterpiece in the field of math. Although the television was appeared in that moment, he considered it as a way to relax himself, and do not want to waste too much time on it. According to his hard-working, he has developed his own theory and won the Nobel Prize owing to the great benefit from his theory in the end.

However, watching television would make our gain the knowledge directly and quickly. Though watching the vivid pictures shown in the television, we can receive the knowledge quickly and directly. Because we save the time to learn the meaning, we will have more time to learn much more knowledge than before. For instance, many people gain a lot of knowledge about the nature though watching the television programs in the Discovery Channel. Several years ago, if we want to have these knowledge, we will read a lot of books which will cost us a couple of days or even several years. In short, watching television also has its own advantageous for learning the knowledge.

In sum, reading books is useful for us to understand the hidden meaning and knowledge, and it also can improve our reading and imaging abilities which are very important for our lives and work. Therefore, reading books is very important and necessary for us. Nevertheless, watching television can extend our views directly and quickly. In the final analysis, it will be more effective that we use both watching television and reading books to learn the knowledge.
