------正文------
Is not it a paradox when we enjoy the comfort and civilization provided by scientific research and moral, political reform, we prefer such nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits to the original motivation of our progress? Do they really play a pivotal role in society in satisfying human need that is more or less superior to mainstream science? To answer the questions mentioned above, we have to get down to fundamentals which distinguish such nonmainstream areas from our accepted science, as discussed below.
Admittedly, these nonmainstream areas of inquiry address certain human needs, whether the needs are reasonable or absurd, which mainstream areas of intellectual inquiry cannot.
Compared with science or social reforms which greatly improve the level of our civilization and standard of life, our human lasting sufferings, especially deeply in our moral and spirits ,change litter no matter how advanced a technology is involved and adopted. One apt illustration to this point involves the common sorrows among us---the death of our lovers. At such circumstances, our emotion is overwhelming the bank of mind, which would either refuse to admit the true or attribute such desirable things to his fault or inner sick.
Either of which can greatly make a positive, active and life-loving man to a passive, negative, even anti-social being while our advanced science lend no effective hand to these unfortunate persons. To release such feelings, astrology, fortune-telling and psychic can bridge the gap, whether in reality or just unreasonable, between past, present and future in terms of 'past life ' regression and 'channeling' and the like.
However, considering seemingly sound advantages by nonmainstream areas, it's naive and unjustifiable to draw a hasty conclusion that they are somehow superior to our mainstream science. The bottom line of our science is to provide trusting improvement to human beings --just this bottom line requires a rigorous test and long time adjustment before it can be applied in life which shows the rigorousness of science.
Consider to pick up falsehood or logical flaws from a suspect or witness, nowadays it largely depends on the policeman's experience and limited test methods, not the Mouth of Truth or Golden Compass in Steven King's novel. Imagine that if we fear to make decisions on the credibility of criminal’s statement through our justification, in stead we turn to the help of future tellers and astrologist, who depend on their crystal balls or tarot cards, can we justify fairly or convincingly.
My another contention with the speaker involves the inherent nature of social progress and the factual examples in history, all of which make the speaker's assertion to be ill-conceived and systematic flawed. If the black depend fortune tellers to change their situations, not Martin Luther King and other human right fighters, these African Americans might still be relegated to the backs of buses. If American people don't follow American founders, but wait for astrology to point out the date of independence, America might still be British colonies. After all, it is us-human beings that create history, push our society moving forward and mitigate our sufferings, not a crystal ball, a tarot card, or several coins.
In sum, I concede that the non-mainstream pursuits that the speaker lists are legitimate insofar as they afford may people psychological solace in life. However when such pursuits confronts even conflict with our mainstream science which is the original motivation for progress, they become the impediment to enlightenment and obstacles to advance. |
