I agree with the author that the possible contribution of groups of people whose identifies have long been forgotten should be emphasized and evaluated. Nevertheless, I believe it is unfair to criticize that study of history puts too much weights on individuals.

On the one hand, I would present three reasons for why study of history concerns ordinary people any more. First, lacking enough historical records and related materials is a fatal factor. Secondly, technical feasibility of studying ordinary groups of people from history is highly questionable. Under the current situation, limited number of historians would never afford to study of history in such a large scale, and the time and energy are also problems. Thirdly, ordinary people always progress in a certain circle. Without right direction or inspiration, they continue their repeated work over and over again, and nothing new would be done, saying nothing of significant events and trends. Apparently, from these above aspects, we can clearly conclude that why we cannot and as well as why we have no need to place much more emphasis on common mass.

On the other hand, I would also present four reasons for why choose individuals as the emphasized ones. First, general enough historical records and materials about the individuals build the basic condition. Secondly, individuals in most significant events and trends are always representative of all the groups of people as a whole. we would be much more easier and better understand and generalize these events and trends for our lives nowadays. Thirdly, great individuals marked and emphasized by history always provide us with inspirations to guide our daily lives. When we look back to understand great individuals' histories, we put ourselves into different characters and situations to test our own intellect and to learn courage, diligence and ethics. For example, by learning the lifetime of Edison, we gain courage and persistence from his attitudes towards failure. From the energetic speech of Martin Luther king, we appreciate the great value of ideal toward an equal society that we are still trying to build and complete. The last but the most important, these recorded individuals in every significant events and trends must played a very crucial role, we cannot comprehend the overall progress of these events and trends' origin, development, and completion. For example, James Watt invented and then improved the stream machine, which provoked the first industry revolution. British scientist Faraday found and learned to use electricity, which rendered the second industry revolution. From these above aspects, we also know the indispensability for why we can and why we must do the current work in study of history.

Nevertheless, we also should never neglect the positive and indispensable contribution from the common mass. Considering, for example, the Second World War and the huge project of Manhattan. Without valiant sacrifice of the ordinary groups of British soldiers. We should never remember the famous prime minister, Churchill. Also, without the ordinary groups of scientists assembling in Los Alamos National Laboratory, Oppenheimer, the father of nuclear weapon, would never finished the project. Therefore, as a rule, the famous few provide the ordinary groups of people with direction or inspiration to guide their working lives, and the latter strike together to make the final significant events and trends.

In sum, I agree with the author that the groups of people whose name have been long forgotten have made much more than we know indeed, but the study of history should remain as it has been. Because it has inherent limitations as we discussed in the second paragraph, we cannot require much more from it. Suppose the human race just like a giant, the left hand of which is great individuals, and the right hand of which is common people. Under the right direction of left hand, the right hand advances with powerful fist, and this is the way our human beings progress all along.
