Issue51: "Education will betruly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individualneeds and interests of each student."
提纲:
I agree with the speaker that meeting eachindividual needs and interests of every student are very crucial to fulfill aneffective education. However, the speaker seems to overemphasize the importanceof satisfying students’ needs that, in my view, should be developed after someessential subjects are contented.
Admittedly, individual interest plays animportant role in education, as the famous saying ‘interesting is the bestteacher’ reveals. Interest is a strong motivation to learning, which nothingcan substitute. With interests people are capable of completely indulgingthemselves into learning, thereby the efficiency of learning improves. Besidesinterest will encourage people when faced with difficulty. You cannot envisionan individual without interest is willing to spend several years to prove a mathematicalproblem such as Fermat theory that is considered to be boring and meaninglessin others’ view.
Yet, due to limited educational resources,it is unrealistic for us to meet every student’s need. In order to satisfy eachstudent’s need, teachers chiefly ought to know each student’s interest, whichamounts to an impossible task considering current ratio of students toteachers. One apt illustration of this point is that each high school teacherin China often needs to take the charge of more than 40 students so that he hasno time or energy to acquire each student’s needs, let alone design specificplan to meet every student’s need.
Even though there is abundant educationalresource, the interest and need of individual cannot be overemphasized. The aimof education is to cultivate student’s overall ability including correct selfand social awareness, social responsibility, essential life skills and careerguidance. Without correct self-awareness, even student himself do not knowwhere is his interest, not to mention develop his interest; without appropriatesocial awareness, individual’s interest may violate the social value, which mayundermine the stability of society if we fail to impose effective direction;without some basic life skills, student may lack the ability to survive insociety. Due to the very importance of those aspects mentioned above, theyshould be imparted compulsorily, no matter whether students are interested in.
Although complete liberty in designingeducation is not available to every student, it is schools’ responsibilities totry their best to offer more choice and autonomy to students as long as thequality of compulsory education is guaranteed. For example, many schools haveoffered students majored in maths various elective courses such as algebra and topology. After finishing compulsory courses, students can choose some elective coursesaccording to their personal interest for further studying. Only in this way canan effective education be achieved.
In conclusion, satisfying individual’s needcannot consequently lead to effective education, though it plays a significantrole in learning process. An effective education requires a good combination ofpersonal interests and overall demand on compulsory courses. |
