Is it true that we can only choose either tradition or modernization and we can not choose both of them? While admitting that some characteristics of tradition and modernization are incompatible to some extend, I do not agree with the author's assertion and I think both of them are playing a vital role in the healthy development of our society.
On the one hand, as our society is developing in an amazing speed, the trend of modernization can not be stopped. Thanks to modernization, we human beings are living such a comfortable and convenience life better than ever before. So easily and quickly we can reach a far-away play with the help of cars and planes an talk to our friends in different countries. Television and worldwide Internet makes this big world into a "global village".
On the other hand, tradition means so much to a country that it can never be neglected. First of all, tradition is the core of a country's culture. By keeping these traditions, many old thinking and virtues can be saved. Secondly, traditions are always represent a country, for instance, the Kimono of Japan is already a symbol of the country. Because of traditions, citizens of a country develop a strong sense of culture and self identity, which serve to unite a country. For example, the spring festival, one of the most important traditions in China, is the time when all members of a family get together from all over the country.
Admittedly, there are incompatibilities between modernization and tradition. People get used to modernized life style surely can not suffer the traditional way of living while people who has very traditional ideas may feel very uncomfortable to tolerant a fashion young boy.
However, it is totally wrong to choose only one between them merely based on these incompatibilities for it will do us more good if these two can work harmoniously together. A country without tradition is like a man without memory, he can not learn from his past. A country without modernization can never improve itself and it will remain the same as the time passes by. Only when these two are very well combined together can a country be complete. As a result, while sparing no effort on modernization, the government should take into account the protection of the old buildings during urban construction. School education of the traditional virtue and thinking should be enhanced. Traditional festivals should be paid more attention.
In sum, tradition and modernization have respectively influences on a country's development and neither of them should be neglected. Governments should address more attention on the issue of how to best combine these two.
