The speaker claims that the greatness of individuals cannot be decided by their contemporaries. Admittedly, truly profound thinkers and highly creative artists, whose theories and thoughts challenges to the knowledge systems of their contemporaries, are always out of step with their time and their society, however, the success of inventors whose inventions solve much difficulties or businessmen who make a lot of fortune can be recognized in time.

Most brilliant minds and prodigies often could not receive contemporary appreciation and comprehension, especially in the realm of scientific theories and arts. Sigmund Freud who opened a widow on the unconscious was unacceptable by his contemporaries, because his fundamental idea ? that all humans are endowed with an unconscious in which potent sexual and aggressive drives, and defenses against them, struggle for supremacy as it were, behind a person’s back ? had struck many as a romantic, scientifically unprovable notion at that time. However, his psychoanalysis theory profoundly influence 20th-century thought and no one will deny his greatness now.

When it comes to art, greatness lies in their enduring influence to those of later generation, thus, lots of artists’ greatnesses even cannot be noticed when they were aboveground. Van Gogh is proper to be mentioned as a representative of this kind. He created the impressionism on painting, which was accepted many years after his death. Moreover, Beethoven’s early listeners, accustomed to the predicable harmonies and melodic lengths of Haydn, dismisses his symphonies as literally causing their ears to hurt. However, it has been proved that the new style of symphonies is a real advance of music.

The great achievement above cannot be appreciated because of the limitation of those ages. At that time, the scientists cannot demonstrate their theories firmly, and with the development of science and technology, the people living after them are able to establish the importance of their theories. Similarly, after the test of time, the value of the arts can be recognized easily.

In the realm of invention and business, the result of them can be tested immediately when they are applied in practice. When the first light was invented, human beings said good-bye to the darkness, and his contemporaries had found the greatness of his creation. The discovery of hybrid rice not only feeds all Chinese currently, which has been applied to various countries and areas, but are going to benefit more people. Needless to say the fortunes of Bill Gate, just his process of founding Microsoft is a legend of commerce. His name is familiar to the whole world at the present age.

Borrowing the old saying, “no matter when, all gold is shining.” To sum up, in my view, the greatness can be realized by people when the opportunities are mature. The discovery of the greatness depends more on the characters of it. The challenging theories are often intolerable by their contemporaries, however, the applied inventions or innovations are welcomed by the masses at that time, andsuccessful commercial patterns are chased right away.
