TOPIC: ISSUE144 - "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."

*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.

Do the artists, but not the critics give society something of lasting value? I wholeheartedly agree with that the artists do give us the lasting-value things. However, the critics also contribute to these great works.

No artists, no art. The artists' creation and inspiration give us numbers of splendid works, which are the precious treasure of human being. When you walk in Louvre and imperial palace or other museum in the world, you must be shocked by the great art works which are created by the artists in human's history. Van Gogh, Leonardo da Vinci, Picasso and other countless artists created these works. These works gave human endless inspiration. People can feel wonderful life and beautiful nature from them. These art works greatly enrich people's spirit's world. All these works have lasting value to the human.

However, the critics also contribute to these great works. First of all, critics can help us understand and interpret art. Not everyone can understand the value hidden in the art works. The critics can find it and interpret it for us. Though their insight, we can fully understand the value of arts. Van Gogh, as an example, could not be understood by the people in his time. They laughed at he and thought his works worthless. Until a critic found his works, the whole world finally understand the value of Van Gogh. Without the critic, we can never understand this genius. Second, a critic's evaluation of an art work serves as a filter which helps us determine which art is worth our time and attention. Admittedly, some art works are wonderful, while some art works are terrible. The critic can distinguish the art works and pick out the wonderful works for us. A critic's evaluation would arouse people's attention to the great works and it is important to the preservation of these works. Furthmore, a critic can provide feedback for artists, and constructive criticism, if taken to heart, can result in better work. The critic who is familiar to the art and the trend of it. He can point out the flaw and merit of an art work. The artist can find new inspiration and idea from the critic's construction criticism. This is very important to the development of art.

In a word, artists and critics supplement each other. As time passes, the greatest works are those which are created by artists and evaluated by critics which draw people's attention towards those works.
