Do you agree or disagree: People can learn more from watching television than reading books.

What is learning? In my view, this is a threshold question before we appraise the value of watching television and reading books in terms of their contribution to learning. Therefore, before giving my own choice, I would like to address this question in the first place.

Learning, as far as I am concerned, is a process in which we are acquainted with something unknown, usually knowledge about the external world as well as the psychological world, and then making these knowledge internalized through critical thinking. Hence comes the question--can television provide us with more knowledge than books?

The answer is probably negative. It is true that television keeps one informed with the most up-to-date news, yet news themselves are not knowledge. Further, even though it can deliver certain knowledge about the world or arousing thinking about humanity, as the Discovery program and some excellent movies can do, most programs are usually highly selective for the reason that producers have to take into consideration the taste of advertisers and average people, who probably prefer programs designed primarily for amusement and entertainment, not for the pursuit of knowledge. If one turns on the television, one would find this is true. There are so many soap dramas, advertisements that one has to turn it off in order to let one’s mind free. Consequently, it is unfair to say that one can learn more through watching television than reading books, since it is dubious to assume that television provide more knowledge than books.

Watching TV is even more inferior to reading books in terms of learning through critical thinking, which is the core of learning activity. Television is a combination of visual image and sound. That is to say, when we are watching TV, three out of the five sense organs are occupied. We see what is on the TV, not what is in our mind. We listen to the sounds in television, not the voices of our own reasoning. However, when we are reading books, the case is different. For instance, when reading a novel, which has only texts, we have to construct the image of those characters by ourselves. This very act simply nurtures our ability of independent thinking. Only through this way can we truly learn something, not just knowing about something. Therefore, I deem that learning by watching television is not a good choice, not to say we can learn more through watching TV

In sum, considering the characteristic of learning activities, I would stand against the claim that one can learn more through watching television. On the contrary, books should be the primary channel of learning since it provides more accurate and highly diversified knowledge and encourages our critical thinking.

The answer is probably negative. It is true that television keeps one informed with the most up-to-date news, yet news themselves are not knowledge. Further, even though it can deliver--convey? certain knowledge about the world or arousing thinking about humanity, as the Discovery program and some excellent movies can do, most programs are usually highly selective for the reason that producers have to take into consideration the taste of advertisers and average people, who probably prefer programs designed primarily for amusement and entertainment, not for the pursuit of knowledge. If one turns on the television, one--he would find this is true.

While television keeps one informed with a myriad of information, the authenticity of which is usually hard to determine, information themselves do not suffice to be regardede as knowledge--a network of truth.

It is true that television keeps one informed with the most up-to-date news, yet news themselves are not knowledge.
