Firstly appeared nearly in nineteenth century, a debate about whether those nonmainstream areas of inquiry, especially astrology, are reasonable to exist.
The issue which has been discussed over hundreds of years appears really intractable to obtain a common realized answer. Maybe with a further development of science and technology, people would be able to ravel out the problem. Hitherto, amazed by the accuracy of some nonmainstream predictions, I am inclined to believe these inquiries, such as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits,
at least satisfied some human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science.
When dating back the fist appearance of these nonmainstream areas of inquiries, I astonishingly find that all of these studies share a terribly long history. Astrology, for instance, is reported that its earliest recorded beginnings occur in 3rd millennium BC. Moreover, astronomy, which definitely belongs to mainstream science, diverged from astrology merely after a period of gradual separation from the Renaissance up until the 18th century, which means in a long ancient times, astrology together with astronomy belongs to one field of study. In my view, these facts reflect an indispensible role of astronomy, as well as other nonmainstream inquiries, which not only act like a mecca to those mainstream science, but also supplement the dent of nowadays science.
Although some scientists couldn't kill people's curiosity in these nonmainstream studies, they still view the studies as pseudoscience or superstition, reasoning that these cannot be substantiated by scientific method. In fact, there are significant obstacles in carrying out scientific research into nonmainstream inquiries today, including lack of funding, lack of background in science and statistics, and also insufficient expertise. Therefore, it's unfair to expel these studies outside of areas of science. Given that astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits, none of which is classified as science, it isn't yet equal to useless.
Throughout its long history, nonmainstream areas of inquiry have come to prominence in many regions and undergone developments and change. There are many astrological traditions that are historically important, especially in shaping cultures in terms of language and literature. For instance, many writers, notably William Shakespeare, used astrological symbolism to add subtlety and nuance to the description of characteristics’ motivations. Also, this kind of discipline has a profound influence over millions of people in the world. According to a poll, 31% Americans expressed a belief in astrology. A nearly same consequence exists in another research shows that 39% of Americans considered it scientific. Despite of its rationality, merely based on the statistics, we could sense the essential role of the studies in people's society.
To conclude, while a debate whether nonmainstream studies is scientific or not goes on, we still somewhat believe the analyze of personality, human affairs, or predictions about future according to observations of celestial bodies or mysterious pocks. To this aspect, such research truely plays a vital role in society. |
