TOPIC: ARGUMENT15 - The following appeared in a newsletter offering advice to investors.

"Over 80 percent of the respondents to a recent survey indicated a desire to reduce their intake of foods containing fats and cholesterol, and today low-fat products abound in many food stores. Since many of the food products currently marketed by Old Dairy Industries are high in fat and cholesterol, the company's sales are likely to diminish greatly and their profits will no doubt decrease. We therefore advise Old Dairy stockholders to sell their shares and other investors not to purchase stock in this company."

In this argument, the arguer advises Old Dairy stockholders to sell their shares and other investors not to purchase stock in this argument. The arguer makes this suggestion because over 80 percent of the respondents to a recent survey indicated a desire to reduce their intake of foods containing fats and cholesterol and today low-fat products abound in many food stores while many of the food products currently marketed by Old Daily Industries are high in fat and cholesterol, so the arguer assumes that the company's sale are likely to diminish greatly and their profits will no doubt decrease. However, the assumption is unwarranted and the suggestion is unconvincing.

First, the value of the recent survey conducted remains uncertain because the author does not mention the character of the respondents, neither does he mention the number of the respondents. If the respondents tend to be old-aged ones, the survey may only represent the older people's desires or if the number of the respondents is too small, the survey is not typical, either. So the survey might have any meaning.

Moreover, even if the survey is valuable and most of the residents have a desire to reduce their intake of foods containing fats and cholesterol, it does not mean they will put it into action despite of the temptation of fats and cholesterol. So although nowadays low-fat products abound in many food stores, there may be still few people going to buy them. Thus the challenges Old Diary Industries face would not be as aggravate as the author assumes.

Finally, even if the low-fat products today are very popular, there must still be needs for food products which are high in fat and cholesterol. And since many old competitors turn to selling low-fat products instead, there will be fewer competitors for Old Dairy Industries which may lead to better sales. Besides, the stockholders should look into the potential of Old Daily Industries which may have some changes in the future to improve their situation. So it is arbitrary to assert that the company's sales are likely to diminish and their profits will no doubt decrease, and suggest the stockholders to sell their shares and other investors not to purchase stock in this company.

To sum up, the conclusions in this argument is not well reasoned. To strengthen the argument, the arguer should provide more details to make the survey valuable and more evidences to prove that the market of Old Daily Industries is narrowing.
