101. Soybeans – cholesterol level

The memo from the president of a breakfast cereals company argued that it would be beneficial for both the company and the customers if the company fortify its Wheat-O cereal with soy protein. This claim is reasonable at the first glance, but it lacks of persuasive logic and was over idealistic.

The recent study that the memo cited was based on the cholesterol levels of subjects who eat soybeans, but the arguer used it as supporting evidence that adding soy protein into Wheat-O can appeal to additional health-concern consumers and improve their health. Since it is not the only part of soybeans, soy protein might not be the real effective part that lowers cholesterol levels.

Even if soy protein does lower cholesterol levels, it is still not clear that sales will be increased after the addition of soy protein. First of all, there is a certain portion of the population that is allergic to soy protein. Also, adding soy protein may lead to a change in flavor of the cereal and/or an increase in product price, consumers who do not like the new flavor or cannot afford the price change will turn to some of its substitutes. These two groups of people will no longer purchase this brand of cereal because of the change in ingredients. Although some new customers may be attracted by the addition of soy protein, there is still a possibility that the sales might even decrease because some of the old customers may spin off.

The memo also claimed that this new version of Wheat-O would increase company profits. It is not very persuasive in that it ignores the possibility that the fortification might cost a lot, which can increase the production cost of this cereal. The increase in sales itself does not directly lead to the increase in profits.

The claim that the new Wheat-O will improve the health of customers is vague, too. There is no relevant study on how many times should people eat this new version of Wheat-O before it can improve health.
More studies on what part of the soybeans helped lower cholesterol level should be conducted before the company makes a decision to fortify its current Wheat-O ingredients. Also, a market survey on how customers will react to the new cereal should be done in order to see what the net consumer flow would be. Moreover, a research on under what frequency people should eat the new Wheat-O to benefit from its soy protein’s lower cholesterol level should also be conducted before the company can claim that it does improve health.

167. Lavender

The experiment and conclusion that the scent in lavender flowers has now been proved effective in curing insomnia is seemingly reasonable but lacks of sound logic.

This experiment is open to doubt first because of the sample that it used. The arguer mentioned that all the volunteers had chronic insomnia. It is clear that people who suffer from different kinds of insomnia react differently to different medications. In order to prove that the scent in lavender flowers is effective to insomnia as a whole, the sample should be made up by randomly selected insomnia cases. The conclusion only based on this sample is a hasty generalization. Also, the small sample size of 30 may not be very powerful in making it a sound study.

Secondly, the procedure of this experiment is not reasonable enough to prove the conclusion. The fact that volunteers report that they feel tired after waking up in the first week has to be compared to whether they have always been feeling this way through the time while they were taking their usual sleeping medication. Did the lavender-scented pillows have a negative effect on how people feel after getting up? By taking no sleeping medication at all in the second week, the objects may have a hard time falling asleep simply because of psychological effect. Over the third week, the arguer directly links the volunteers’ report of sleeping longer and more soundly than the previous two weeks to the help of lavender-scented pillows without considering any other possible existing factors. After sleeping in the same controlled room and being monitored by the same machines for two weeks, the volunteers might feel more comfortable and thus can sleep better. In another word, the improvement in sleeping quality in the third week may not solely because of the lavender-scented pillows. More over, the experiment also lacks of observations about how the volunteers feel in the following weeks. Is the longer and more soundly sleep only an accident in the third week or can it last since then?

Last but not least, whether the insomnia is cured is not only depend on if the sleep is long and sound, the time it takes before the object fall asleep is an example of the other factors. By observing only sleeping length and soundness, this study is not complete enough to prove this folk remedy is effective.

The study has to be revised in the sense of sample, method, and length of the experiment before it can be used as an effective evidence of the conclusion that the scent of lavender cures insomnia.

Issue 13: Many of the world’s lesser-known languages are being lost as fewer and fewer people speak them. The government of countries in which these languages are spoken should act to prevent such languages from becoming extinct.

Should the government of countries in which endangered languages are spoken act to prevent them from becoming extinct? The speaker is in favor of this idea, and I tend to think that although the government should put some effort into preserving the languages, it should not be the only focus and should not act alone.
A language is not an organism but a set of patterns in speakers’ minds and behavior. So strictly speaking, when a language goes “extinct”, it is not as if something were “dying” as a living species can, but more like a cultural custom passing out of use. But a language is far more fundamental to our whole thought than, say, a regional style of dressing. When a language goes out of use, something central in human thought has vanished.
Although languages are important as culture carriers, it becomes more and more important that people need to communicate with each other without too much barriers in an age of mass communication. Different languages, however, have been one of the greatest barriers in the area of business, technology, and even everyday life. It is evident that the major players in world economy either have one (or more than one) of the global languages as their official language(s) or have been working hard in education so that whatever people speak at home, priority should go to making sure that children know one dominant language. Remote areas where most endangered languages are being spoken are usually more or less behind the development status of the country as a whole. Farmers cannot communicate with potential buyers out there to sell their products even they can use internet to find the buyers. Youngsters have little chance to leave the villages and learn about the new technology. These all lead to a further competitively loss of certain villages or tribes or areas. In order to keep up with the rest of the world, it is important to speak a language that at least a certain percentage of the world population can understand. For the sake of economic and technological development, governments should think twice before allocating their limited amount of funds.
Not only should education department be cautious when financing the tax payers’ money, it is also essential to understand that government should not be the only part that participate in saving the lesser-known languages. No matter what kind of policy is used, the only test of a language’s viability is everyday life and the way to keep it alive is by talking to others who speak the same language. The Hebrew has been considered as a dead language only used for bible studies for thousands of years before its revival in the end of 19 century during Jewish national movement. Russian Jewish Ben-Yehuda set out to develop tools for making the literary language into everyday spoken language. By talking to people in Hebrew during every possible occasion, he made people understand the need for a common language amongst Jews. Although Hebrew has never been extinct, it was not used in daily life for thousands of years before it became a spoken language again. This example shows that the willingness of preservation among ordinary people is equally important if not more because they are those who speak the languages.
It's hardly possible for us to conceive of a situation where our English language is spoken by nobody any more, in other words has “died out”. And yet this is exactly the fate of many languages. The government should, with the cooperation of its people, help to prevent these languages from becoming extinct. At the same time, however, it has to make sure that the country‘s participation in global activities will not be hurt by language barriers. In another word, the government should make wise decisions to fund the education of global language(s).

I love you X.

173. International news stories on front covers (06/26)
The publisher of Newsbeat claimed that the magazine should decrease its emphasis on international news and refrain from displaying such stories on the magazine covers. However, the reasons that he/she gave do not provide a reasonable logic procedure that can lead to the conclusion that showed up at the end of this memorandum.
First of all, the fact that “the poorest-selling magazine issues were those that featured international news stories on their front covers” does not necessarily mean that there is a causal relationship between them. In the publication industry, it is important for publishers to understand that there is no one dominant factors that can affect the sales of magazines, and it is more beneficial if they think thoroughly before making decisions. The magazine issuer of Newsbeat in this case has to realize this and to find out if the front cover led to the poor sales. After this, the issuer has to consider whether it was just the appearance of international news stories that made readers unwilling to buy the magazine or it was because of the quality of these reports. Different reasons lead to different solutions: the magazine can improve its international news reporter group by hiring new reporters who can do a better writing or it has to cut its focus on foreign news and leave the front covers to other kind of stories. In a word, the publisher has to find out the real reason for those poorest-selling issues and make effort in improving the situation.
Secondly, the memo mentioned, but failed to offer any useful information, that competing news-magazines have been significantly decreasing the number of international news cover stories. No detailed reasoning procedures and results were provided in this memo. Did they experience similar situations and find out it would be profitable if they decrease international news stories on the cover or they simply could not afford international bureaus? Do these magazines now sell more than before? With these questions unanswered, it is not wise to just follow the trend and decrease Newsbeat’s emphasis on international news. It is actually possible that with all competitors moving their focus away from front cover international news, Newsbeat can take this chance to benefit from not acting with its competitors.
Moreover, the publisher gave out the fact that “the cost of maintaining foreign bureaus to report on international news is increasing” and used this as one reason why the emphasis on international news should be decreased. This publisher failed to provide the trend of other costs, for example, is the wage rate growing so that the magazine has to pay more to every one of its employees? When there are no other costs to compare with, it is hard to say that this cost increase in maintaining foreign bureaus has negative effect on the magazine as a whole.
To sum up, the logic in this memo has to be strengthened before Newsbeat changes its emphasis on different news and the content that shows on the covers. More facts have to be provided to make the causal relationship between poorest-selling issues and front covers with international news stories more clear and reasonable. At the same time, detailed information about why competitors decreased the number of cover stories devoted to international news and what the outcome is has to be provided. Also, the increase in cost of maintaining foreign bureaus has to be compared with the trend of other costs before it can be used as an argument to support the memo.

242. Honor codes (06/27)

The editorial argued that colleges and universities should adopt honor codes similar to Groveton College’s to combat the recently reported dramatic rise in cheating among students. The author of this editorial claimed that this system helped to decrease the reported cheating cases in Groveton and students said that they would be less likely to cheat with an honor code in place. However, this argument needs a much more complete reasoning before it can be applied to other colleges and universities.
First of all, the change of monitoring system makes students the group to report cheating and this alone can cause the reported number change. During tests, it is very hard for a student to keep an eye on what is going on with his or her fellow students because he or her might be busy trying to finish the tests. This lack of attention may lead to less cheating reports then when teachers were those who were in charge of monitoring. Even though a student does see cheating, it is unclear if he or she is willing to notify the teacher for reasons like not giving a friend a hard time or what if that person will find out and “revenge” in the future. In a word, it is much harder to have students report cheating cases than have teachers do it, and this fact might have been the major reason why there are less reported cases.
The author also used historical numbers to support the argument: the reported case dropped from thirty per year before the honor code was in place to twenty-one the first year it was used, and this figure was fourteen five years later. Although these numbers seem impressive, they were not enough to prove the usefulness of the honor code. It is clear that the number was missing during the second to the fourth year and after the fifth year, thus it failed to show any trend of reported cheating cases. The first year and “five years later” might be the smallest ones through out the time after the honor code was in place.
Even if this new monitoring system has created a decreasing trend in cheating cases, the editorial failed to examine other possible factors that can lead to the trend. Did the student body quantity decrease during recent years? Did the college add the examination of honesty during interviews for perspective students? These all have to be addressed before the conclusion that the honor code was the key to decrease cheating in Groveton.
Last but not least, the author did not realize the fact that schools differ in many ways before he or she argued that “these institutions should adopt honor codes similar to Groveton’s…” The students are different; the reasons why there was a dramatic rise in cheating might have been different. A way that works in Groveton is not promised to work in other schools.
To sum up, this honor code system needs more experiments and numbers so that it can be proved useful to help decreasing cheating in Groveton. Even more has to be done before it is widely adopted by colleges and universities that suffer from cheating problems.

I should really stop fucking my life.
I procrastinated so much these days and I feel terrible about it.
My internship now turns into something like a full time job and I don't have much time during the day to write my essays. This sucks. I think I'm gonna quit this intern earlier than I planned to.
I still haven't finished yesterday's homework because I went to dinner with my friends and talked for like three hours something.
If you wanna rock it, you have to really do it, not just claiming it.
