The author asserts that a chief role of studying of history is that it can help break down the illusion that people in different periods are significantly different. In my view, Studying history authentically plays a significant role in breaking down the illusion. However, people of different periods have some differences that studying history can also help discover. Moreover, studying history also has some other important functions, which to some degree are more important than dispelling the illusion.

It is by studying history that we can understand nature of mankind which remains unchanged all through history. Some nature of human beings-such as virtue, spirits of pursuing love and searching for truth remains the same with the development of history. For example, in all ages, respecting parents flows in blood of human beings; We inherits the spirit of pursuing love, which is well displayed by Romeo and Juliet; today’s scientists inherit the spirit of discovering the truth of the world, which Newton, Einstein showed to their later generations. Without studying history, we cannot well have an understanding of our nature which stays the same throughout history. In short, studying history plays an important role in understanding and inheriting the nature.

However, with the development of history, our human beings are evolving into more rational and views of human beings towards the world are varying continuously. In Feudal Society, people had no sense of freedom and democracy while they are two basic human rights of citizens of modern society; One hundred years ago, in face of nature, we exploited resources of nature excessively and expected to become master of nature while people of the time have complete different opinions, which nature is the physical basis and energy source for the existence and sustainable development of human beings and it deserves our protection, towards nature.

Admittedly, studying history has its significant role in dispelling the illusion, but studying history has some other important roles, which in a way are more important than breaking down the illusion, for our human beings. History is a mirror of human beings. Through studying historical events, we can benefit from them. When we look back to the disaster that a war brought about, we cherish the peace of the today’s world; when we look back to the damage as a result of misuse of natural resources, we understand the importance of harmonious coexistence of humans and nature. In short, looking back to history can help our mankind understand what is important for us and what should we do for a better further of human beings.

To sum up, it is a chief role of studying history that helping mankind understand human’s nature which holds the line throughout history. However, studying history also plays an important role in discovering differences of people in different periods. Moreover, by studying history, mankind can obtain benefits, which to some extent are more important than the benefits of dispelling the illusion.
