ISSUE221 - "The chief benefit of the study of history is to break down the illusion that people in one period of time are significantly different from people who lived at any other time in history."

Mr. History is always erudite enough and could inform us comprehensive knowledge related to various fields such as sociology, anthropology, civilization and so forth. However, an intriguing question need to be paid attention --from what Mr. History told us, which is the chief?

Admittedly, unclosing the veil that people from divergent eras are obviously distinct is a great contribution of history. Considering the rapid technology development and environment change, most believe that the ancient people, even ones living one hundred years before, underwent totally different experience with us, but they are failed to notice that human evolvement are continuous and keep identical in the kernel.

For example, both the past society and current onw are all hierarchical. Although we have endeavored to eliminate the difference for hundreds of years, the rich are still living in commodious villas but the poor have to living in the government-providing tatty houses, and even worse, some one have to sleep in the subway station. And both in ancient time and present era, there are a large number of philosophers, say Bluto, Hegel, Kong Zi in the past andAckoff , Derrida
who were still living now, they perused the same quality such as Peace, Self-Control, Altruism.

However, knowing the similarities among different times is utterly not the most vital aim in the study of history. What should be attached more consideration instead is changes, which could enlighten us to figure out what to do to improve our society and what not to do to avoid setback.

On the one hand, some difference of several periods means the improvements of society and civilization, from which we could find the approach to develop it further. An excellent example to support this opinion is the gradually consummation of law. In about 3 hundreds of years before, some low-class people, from poor family or have no one, even didn’t possess the most fundamental human right, and were recalled as “slavery”. They were sold in the market for only the price as goat or cow, but the money could not be given to them. Afterwards they have to suffer unbearable work for the rest of their life or wait to be sold for another time. Thanks to the nearly disinterested law today, this extreme unfair phenomenon is eradicated clearly. For what reason did this change occurred? I prefer the desire to be equal from everybody’s innermost mind, so, learning from the difference, more effort should be practiced to construct the impartial society.

On the other hand, the historic river is filled with fiascos, which are like powerful bombs to degrade our society and frustrate the diligent work we have done for several decades. Reviewing them could help us obtain the knowledge about how to avert these happened again. Let’s see the economic crisis recently to understand this point. During the last 2 years, several billions of dollars has been vaporized on the global circumstance, which degrade some countries to for 5-7 years, to say the least. Concomitantly, countless companies bankrupted, including the once magnates such as GE, Lehman Brothers, which cut off numerous employers’ income and finally it caused large-scale panic and increased crime rate. This big tragedy should not be permit to happen once more, so we need to learn the lesson that preventing inflation and deficit spending, and strengthen economic audit.

To sum up, knowing the truth that people from different age had plentiful similarities because human evolved in a continuous way is of important. Nevertheless, the most crucial knowledge lied in the changes from which we could acquaint with what should do and what should not do.
