TOPIC: ARGUMENT169 - The following appeared in a letter from a department chairperson to the president of Pierce University.

"Some studies conducted by Bronston College, which is also located in a small town, reveal that both male and female professors are happier living in small towns when their spouses are also employed in the same geographic area. Therefore, in the interest of attracting the most gifted teachers and researchers to our faculty and improving the morale of our entire staff, we at Pierce University should offer employment to the spouse of each new faculty member we hire. Although we cannot expect all offers to be accepted or to be viewed as an ideal job offer, the money invested in this effort will clearly be well spent because, if their spouses have a chance of employment, new professors will be more likely to accept our offers."

In the argument, the arguer concludes that in order to attracting the excellent faculty to Pierce University, school should offer employment to the spouse of new faculty member. To support his conclusion, the arguer cited a result of recently study that professors perfer living in small towns when their spouses are also employed in the same geographic area. But actually, this serise of deducation is unreliable because the argument denies simple logic and suffers from several critical fallacies.

First of all, the arguer provide no more information about the studies conducted by Bronston College. Perhaps this studies only involoves the older faculty that they have no such more ambitions and only enjoy the quiet life with their spouses in a small town. On other hand, the study also do not show that whether the faculty of Pierce University also involoves in the study. It is possible that only the professors that worked for Bronston College participate this study, for this cases this study can not represent for other school. Without more detail about this study be provides, It is hard for us to accept the summption that this study is reliable and representative.

Moreover, even though like the study suggested, that professors are happier living in small towns when their spouses are also employed in the same geographic area, It can not draw the conclusion that the faculy would enjoy work for Pierce University. They may considers whether the style of this university fit them, or whether the quality of university is good enough and so forth. Perhaps there are several prestigious school in this small town, and those gift teachers surly prefer accept these university's offer because they not only can enjoy live in small town, but also have a better job. In addition, the arguer should illustrate clearly that what job would offer to the spouse of new faculty. Obviously, their spouses cannot are enaged in teaching and only job the university can offered are logistics. Pierce University must consider whether the university have so position to accommodate so many people and whether those people enjoy their new job. For example,  as a new faculty's spouses, this people have in charge of one company in other cities but in Pierce University, school only ask her to clean. The fact that the faculty are happier living in small towns when their spouse work in same geographic area cannot support the conclusion that if the university offer their spouse job, the faculty would enjoy work for Pierce University.

In order to attracting the most gigted teachers and researchers to Pierce University, the leader should concern with how to improve the quality of school or provide them better treatment. To expect all offers to be accepted, the university should take more effective meathod than offer their spouse job.

To sum up, the argument lacks credibility because the evidence cited in the analysis does not lend strong support to what the arguer maintains. Stand to reason that it is hard to us to accept the arguer's recommend except the arguer can provides more convictive evidence such as exact statistics about the sutdy, clearly compare with Pierce University and Bronston College, or practical method to support his opinion.
