48"The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten."

When reading the historical annuls, most of the books focus more on the heroes, but kind of neglect that people in those periods of time also contribute all themselves to the country’s and the whole world’s career. In fact, any achievement recorded in the history could not even be successful without the public strength.

Dating back to the days of the war—the Warring States in ancient China, for example. The whole land was divided into seven countries, and each country was dominated by an emperor. There is no doubt that every ruler is eager to enlarge his territory and become the most powerful one. This dream, however, can not accomplish without absolute predominance in the number of warriors and the public—the backup. Moreover, when fighting on the battlefield, though heroes or some outstanding individuals’ abilities are far better than the general soldiers, whoever alone will hardly survive facing a large number of enemies. People’s force is definitely a vital part for a dominator to build up a mighty empire. Regrettably, the current criticism seems to let these palmary individuals take all the credit, but forget about those hard-working people. This is not fair. Besides, the number and the power of the army is also one of the most important factors to consider a country’s strength. Even if the emperor is talented, he could do nothing without his subjects.

Apart from wars, people’s contribution can also be seen in other aspects. There is an old saying, “Rome was not built in a day”. So do the grand pyramids in Egypt. The Pharaohs just made an order. It is the Egyptians that are those who devote all themselves to these splendid architectures. It is the Egyptians that are the persons whom the history should be recorded in. But on the contrary, none of these hard-working people’s names is written in any kind of historical book, instead, a few words at most.

Lenin used to say, “The masses are the source of our strength and the mass viewpoint and the mass line are our cherished traditions.” This may not only be suitable for the socialistic countries, but also for other capitalistic countries in the world. Of course, outstanding individuals must have some unique skills and talented thoughts, but all these may just lead the public to a less struggled guidance so that work could be finished or tasks could be conquered in a more simple way. Outstanding individuals just act as the guiders, but not the integral parts.

Thus, researchers should start paying more attention to the effort made by the groups of people, and should not neglect their contribution to the history. After all, “the masses are the main forces of the revolution”.
