104. It is primarily through formal education that a culture tries to perpetuate the ideas it favors and discredit the ideas it fears.
The core values of a certain culture are inherited and developed in many ways.
Of all the possible ways one can think of, the most important one is of course formal education. Usually sponsored bynational or local government, beginning with elementary and high schools, progressing onto universities and various other forms of learning institutions, formal education perpetuates knowledge and ideas that go with the core values of its culture, and discredits the ones that contradicts them.
Through this form of education, the good virtues that the society values can be better instilled into its citizens’ minds, such as the virtues of respecting the old, loving XXX children , helping the disabled, etc. XXX More importantly, the government can propagate its political values and explain XXX its policies through formal education. With all these efforts, the society can be a more harmonious one, and there can be less violence and disruptionX as well.
However, that is not all that formal education can do. One import role formal education plays is to inspire innovations and encourage new thoughts. No one can deny the fact that a lot of inventions and scientific discoveries are brought about by discussions between students and teachers in the classroom, and that many breakthroughs or reforms are achieved by individuals whose thoughts are enlightened by professors in universities. Formal education provides much more than just to instill the students with knowledge or ideas that are designed for them to absorb, it also enlightens the students to discover the new areas, to advance established theories which can lead to great changes both in science and also in social development.
There are also many other ways that can function the same as formal education in perpetuating ideas, such as the mass media, TV programmes, family educationX etc. XXX Some of them are even more effective in the propagation of ideas. Whenever candidates or political parties want to illustrate their political views or ideals, they would turn to TV commercials or newspapers instead of classroom teachings in universities, because it’s faster, and more visually attractive. Furthermore, formal education is not always accessible for all the citizens. There are geographical reasons, and also traditional reasons for that, such as tribes deep in XXX mountainous areas. They have colourful cultures as well, but mostly they pass on their heritage and beliefs through stories and legends.
What we define as culture is very broad in the range it covers. Formal education is certainly vital to perpetuate social values and cultural heritage, whilst other forms of education such as mass media, social/family traditions etc are equally important. Only through a wide and varied form of educationX, can a society expect its culture to flourish in the future.
