TOPIC: ISSUE17 - "There are two types of laws: just and unjust. Every individual in a society has a responsibility to obey just laws and, even more importantly, to disobey and resist unjust laws."

Laws serve as the tool of the authority to protect the interest of the majority of the people as well as the stability of the society, thus the just laws and unjust laws are relative concepts, which may vary from people to people according to their different interests. However, because of the inherent nature of laws, which are a remedy rather than a precaution, laws often lag the ever changing development of the society, making many aspects of laws unreasonable to some extent. When faced with these deficiencies of laws, I think we should try to evoke the public that improvements of laws are needed rather than just disobey or even resist them.

As for laws that are able to protect the interest of the majority of people, people should obey them as well as supervise and combat those who break the laws. Laws maintain the stability of the society by telling people what they should do and what they cannot do, since everyone is a member of the society, whose interests are in accordance of those of the society on the whole. Imagine that our society is replete with crimes such as robbery, murder, theft, corruption and so forth, what will our life be like? We dare not go out for the fear of being robbed, we dare not fall deeply into sleep for the anxiety of the property of our own being stolen. In short the stability of our society will be greatly challenged. Thus, in order to live happily as well as make our nation a prosperity one, everyone in the society has the responsibility to obey those laws in the first place and then superintend and even combat laws breakers.

While there is no consensus among different people, especially those hold different interest, whether a law is just or unjust, people shouldn't disobey or even resist the laws that are thought to be unjust by them. Admittedly, according to the definition and main functions of laws (mentioned in the first paragraph), it's impossible for laws to protect the interests of everyone in the society. The law that was thought be to just to someone may be thought to be unjust to another one. For instance, as the members of the society, the majority of us are in the hope that the resource not be used up too quickly in order for the sustainable development of our descendents, yet as far as some businessmen, whose jobs inevitably exert a negative impact on the environment are concerned,
their freedom to develop even at the expense of damaging the environment should not be limited. After all, their duty is to seek for profit-maximization for their shareholders and other owners rather than protect the environment. Nevertheless, does this mean that they can do whatever they like even if their deeds go against the laws? Absolutely not. Although such laws seem to be unjust for them, they can do nothing but to obey them, otherwise our world would become a place with no forests, no clean water, and no clean air in which no creatures can even exit including we human beings. Thus, even faced with the seemly unjust laws, we should also obey them.

Admittedly, laws inevitably have their own deficiencies because they are just remedy rather than precaution, which often lag the development of the society. Thus sometimes even the interests of the majority of the people cannot be guaranteed. However, even in these circumstances, we should inform the government the deficiencies of laws to let them make some improvement to protect the interest of the majority of its people rather than
simply disobey or even resist laws. For example, the compulsory education in China used to be not free to the public because of the bad economic conditions in China before. Yet, after the government has bolstered the country's economy greatly, the compulsory education was still not free, which was thought to be an unjust law. However, Chinese people didn't simply disobey the laws, but evoke the government the deficiency of this law and finally succeed in turning compulsory education into free. If the Chinese people go against the government by resist the laws, the stability of the country will be undermined,

Thus, only through peaceful ways can we
manage to protect to legal rights.

To sum up,
laws cannot be divided into just laws and unjust laws, and people in the society should in the first place spare no efforts to obey the laws that protect the interests of the majority of the people and then supervise and combat with those who break laws in order to make our society a better one. Besides, even faced with some deficiencies of laws we should evoke the authority by legal ways rather than illegal ways for the stability of the society.
