ISSUE 81

All parents should be required to volunteer time to their children's schools. [Specific Task Instruction: Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the recommendation and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, describe specific circumstances in which adopting the recommendation would or would not be advantageous and explain how these examples shape your position.]

The author suggests all parents should be required to volunteer time to their children’s school. In my opinion, in most circumstances, parents’ volunteering time to their children’s schools is good for the growth of their children, but the requirement is not necessary for all students’ parents.

Parents can use several ways to volunteer time to their children’s school, like participating parents’ meeting, attending contribution funds activities hold by school or some other entertainment games by both parents and children. And under most situations, parents’ participating into their children’s school life does benefits to their children’s growth. Parents choose to volunteer time to some lessons teaching by their children’s teachers can censor the quality of teaching and improve the school’s performance. For example, in Jiang Xi province of China, a high school often invite parents to classes, and the method not only improves the level of teaching but also lets most students get a very good score in the university entrance examination. Also, parents participating in some activities of school can improve the relationship between them and their children, and make the relationship more closely and more firmly. For example, in the society of England, about 80% of parents suggest that they are willing to participate activities in their children’s school, because their children are very happy about that and they suggest that after these activities their children become more willing to share ideas with them and the relationship between them become more closely.

Moreover, if parents are not willing to volunteer time to their children’s school, the education in school will be determined only by school. And there is no doubt that it is harmful for education. There are several reasons. First, because parents don’t spend time in their children’s school, they are not familiar about their children’s school education, and then they can not give some necessary suggestions to the school and it is actually not good for their children. Second, their children may feel less love from their parents and do not want to spend much time in school. This can be substantiated by many examples in Chinese society. Because of the fast development of Chinese economics, many people become very busy and want to earn more money, and they do not have much time to spend with their children, let alone spend time in their children’s school. And research suggests that these children are more unwilling to study and often feel lost. Third, parents will have less opportunities of communicating with other parents about education. And it is a loss because discussion often makes improvement on the method of parents’ education.

However, requiring all parents to volunteer time to school is not necessary. We should consider some special situations that parents can not be presented in children’s school activities. For example, in some places, parents have to go far away to earn money in order to let their children to be educated, and for them, volunteering time to children’s school is not possible. For the reason that participating children’s school activities is beneficial, the society and school should encourage parents to do such thing, but requirement on every parent is not necessary.

In conclusion, encouragement of parents’ volunteering time to children’s school is necessary, because it is good for children’s growth and education. But requirement on all parents is not necessary.
