TOPIC: ARGUMENT51 - The following appeared in a medical newsletter.

"Doctors have long suspected that secondary infections may keep some patients from healing quickly after severe muscle strain. This hypothesis has now been proved by preliminary results of a study of two groups of patients. The first group of patients, all being treated for muscle injuries by Dr. Newland, a doctor who specializes in sports medicine, took antibiotics regularly throughout their treatment. Their recuperation time was, on average, 40 percent quicker than typically expected. Patients in the second group, all being treated by Dr. Alton, a general physician, were given sugar pills, although the patients believed they were taking antibiotics. Their average recuperation time was not significantly reduced. Therefore, all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain would be well advised to take antibiotics as part of their treatment."

The newsletter recommends that any patient who is diagnosed with muscle strain should take antibiotics as part of his/her treatment. To strength the recommendation the author cities a study with two groups of patients. In the study, the first group treated by a specialist in sport medicine take antibiotics, while the other group cured by general physician take sugar pills. As a result, in the former group, patients' recuperation times was reduced while the patients in latter group not. However, after careful analysis, the argue procedure have several logical flaws which render it unconvincing as it stands.

To begin with, the final conclusion is based on the study of two groups of patients, but the arguer fails to tell us enough information about the two groups of patients and prove they are comparable. There are many factors can affect the recuperation times, such as health conditions, ages, and the severity degrees of patients. It is entirely possible that the patients in the latter groups are older than in the former groups, their recuperation time is shorter just due to young people have better physical condition than old people.
The author fails to consider these factors,
so the conclusion is unconvincing.

What's more, the author mentioned that the doctor for first group of patients is a specialist in sports medicine, while for the second group is a general physician.
The common sense tells us that a specialist in sports medicine can give more professional treatment for patients than a physician. The author did not give more details about the treatments of the two groups. Therefore, we cannot draw the conclusion the shorter recuperation time of first groups of patients was a result of taking antibiotics.

Finally, even if assuming that antibiotics do have effect on muscle strain, it is still too hasty to come to the conclusion that all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain should take antibiotics as part of their treatment. Maybe, other kind of recovery treatment or medicine could be more efficient. It is also possible that the antibiotics have some side-effects on many people. Without ruling out these possibilities, the author cannot convince me that all the patients with muscle strain should take antibiotics.

To sum up, the newsletter not only suffer the flaws of failing to prove the two groups of patients are comparable, but also has not ruling out the influence of the different doctors for two groups. At last, the author fails to consider whether the antibiotic have potential harm for some patients, so the conclusion is not a reasonable suggestion.
