I agree with this opinion that appearances can manifest people’s attitudes and interests. However, a society’s ideas and values are composed by myriad of variables. We cannot evaluate them only by observing the appearance and behavior of its people.

Admittedly, appearance that people look, dress, and act reveal their attitudes. For example, a professor in college usually wears neat and formal uniforms, while a pop singer is utterly different from the college professor on appearance. The college professors are those who have strict attitudes toward their work and always have an interest in serious issues and grand political affairs. However, pop singers are those who pursue the fresh and exciting things. They often look fashion and like wearing extraordinarily. The ways that those two kinds of people look, dress, and act reveal their attitudes and interests. Obviously, the professor and the pop singer have different values on the same thing.

Secondly, different appearance and behavior can reflect the ideas and attitudes of a society. Every individual has his or her unique characteristics, but when they get together and compose a society, they tend to be affected by others. People learn from each other. Gradually, a steady social environment is shaped, and all kinds of different ideas assimilating into a certain society. After a long time, a society’s ideas and values are formed. I’d like to illustrate this point by the differences between the Arab and American societies. In Arabia, women always wear veils and hide their face behind the veils. People adopt an austere interpretation of Islam. Without the companies of male relatives, women are not allowed to meet strangers. In America, people like wearing T-shirt and jeans which are neat and casual in appearance. People are free to communicate in multicultural atmospheres. No strain for women because they admire everyone is equal. Those two kinds of societies have different people have different attitudes, beliefs, and appearances, which reflect the different ideas and values of those two societies.

Not only can you tell about a society’s ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people, but also from many other aspects, such as religion, politic, economy, and culture. People’s behaviors and appearances are influenced by those factors. First, religions deeply take root in a country and its citizens. The Christian are different from the Islamic in many issues. Second, different political positions bring about different international roles, which could trigger the peace or war to a country. Third, economy is the basis for a country to be prosperous, and finally, culture influences the mind and common consciousness of a country, which cultivate different people in different cultural environments.

To sum up, I’d like to say that there is no doubt, a person’ attitude and interest can be reflected by his look, dress, and act. Ideas and values of different societies can be classified by people’s behaviors and appearances. However, I don’t think the few factors discussed above can determine a person, a society. Therefore, there are more factors should be considered.
