TOPIC: ARGUMENT209 - The following recommendation was made by the Human Resources Manager to the board of directors of the Fancy Toy Company.

"In the last three quarters of this year, under the leadership of our president, Pat Salvo, our profits have fallen considerably. Thus, we should ask for her resignation in return for a generous severance package. In Pat's place, we should appoint Rosa Winnings. Rosa is currently president of Starlight Jewelry, a company whose profits have increased dramatically over the past several years. Although we will have to pay Rosa twice the salary that Pat has been receiving, it will be well worth it because we can soon expect our profits to increase considerably."

The argument's conclusion is that the Fancy Toy Company(FTC) should replacing Pat Salvo (PS), the currently president of the FTC, with Rosa Winnings(RW) in order to increase the FTC's profits. To justify this conclusion the argument points out that the FTC's profits have fallen considerably in the last three quarters of this year, while Starlight Jewelry (SJ), whose currently president is Rosa, has seen its profits increased dramatically over the past several years.
However, I find the argument unpersuasive, for several reasons.

Firstly, in the last three quarters of this year, the decrease in the FTC's profits is not necessarily due to the leading of the president PS.
There are many factors influencing a company's profits rather than merely by the leading of the president. It is possible that the decrease is just due to the economic crisis and has no relationship with the leading of PS.
The author fails to take into account this possibility, the conclusion is unreasonable.

Similarly,
the author fails to prove RW plays the
most important role in the increase of SJ's profits during the past several years.
We do not know how long RW has been the president of SJ. Perhaps, RW has only served as president of Starlight for a short while, and it was her predecessor who is to credit for Starlight's profitability. Without taking into accounting these possibilities, the manager cannot defend the conclusion that it is RW who is responsible for Starlight's increasing profitability.

Even if the decrease of FTS's profits was attributable to PS's leadership and RW gave the increase of SJ 's profits, the argument unfairly assumes that FTS's profits will increase considerably, after FTS appointed RW. Common sense tells us that they are different with each other that leading a Jewelry company and managing a toy company. The author fails to prove that the two businesses are sufficiently similar that RW's experience and skill in one business will transfer to the other.

To sum up, the argument is unpersuasive as it stands. To bolster it the argument's author must show --- perhaps by way of a reliable study on the two companies' administration in the past --- PS and RW take the greatest responsibilities for the increase and decrease of their companies' profits.
Finally, to better assess the argument I would need detailed information about RW and the FTS to analyze whether RW is the suitable president of FTS.
