Describe a book or film about the future you read or watched.
You should say:
What the name of it was
When you read or watched it
What it was about
And explain how you felt about it.

Ok right then, well the film I’m gonna talk about is called Waterworld, the reason being that it’s the only one I can actually remember watching which was set in the future.

So anyway, as for when I watched it, well I suppose it must have been around five or six years ago, when I was still at middle school, and regarding what the film was about, well basically, it’s set at a time when the planet is almost completely submerged in water, because the ice caps have all melted due to global warming, and so the sea levels have risen to a point where all land has pretty much been covered by water.

So that’s the situation, and basically what happens in the film is that everyone’s living on boats and looking for land. And if I remember correctly, there’s a girl who’s got some kind of map tattooed on her which shows where land can actually be found.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, the film finishes with them eventually finding the land and living happily ever after, which came as no surprise to me, seeing as most Hollywood movies tend to end that way.

So yeah, that’s basically the gist of it, and as for what I thought of the film, well to tell you the truth I didn’t really think it was all that good, because I mean the plot was a bit too predictable, you know, there was no real suspense. So in that respect, I thought it could have been better. But saying that, I suppose there were also a few things I did like about it, one of which was the special effects, which I thought were pretty impressive.

And another thing I liked about the film was that it made me really kind of appreciate the land that we have around us, which I know sounds a bit ridiculous, but I mean, before watching the film, I kind of just took it for granted and didn’t really think much about it. So in a way it sort of helped me appreciate my life a bit more, if you know what I mean!

So yeah, I guess that’s pretty much all there is to say. Thanks for listening!

Notes:
Ok right then = Ok (I'm ready to begin)
It must have been around five or six years ago = 应该是五、六年前吧 (It was about five or six years ago.)
that’s basically the gist of it = that's basically what happened
So in that respect = in that aspect
But saying that = 但是话又说回来
in a way = 在某种程度上
pretty much = 差不多

当时觉得这个话题也挺难讲的  所以最后说了叮当猫(音乐起:我有一直叮当猫,变大变小,变漂亮,还有吃不完的零食和玩具,时空机 )

A plant in my country is bamboo. Bamboo is a representation of Chinese culture. When westerners see bamboo, they will think of China. Bamboo is greenish and it grows quite high. In Sichuan Province, there are bamboo forests that really makes you feel like you are in a totally different world. What’s more, bamboo is Panda’s favorite food. You know, pandas are our national treasure so we often correlate pandas with bamboo.  Bamboo is used in many places, for example people use it to build homes, rafts and fences. Chinese also eat bamboo shoots. I really like bamboo because I love green things, and I remember going to the bamboo forest when I was young and it felt like a fantasy land. After that, I fell I love with bamboo.

Describe another language (not English) that you would like to learn.
You should say:
What language it would be
How you would learn it
What equipment or facilities you would need to study this language
And explain what difficulties you think you would have / why you would choose this language.
结构的魅力, when it comes to as for how i would learn it regarding what 。。with regard of
Ok right then, well there are actually quite a few languages that I would like to learn, but probably the one I’d like to learn most is French, partly because I think it sounds really nice, and also because France is a country that I’d really love to visit sometime. And so if was able to speak French, I would then be able to converse with the locals, which I think would give me a much better understanding of the country and also make my time there a lot more interesting and enjoyable.

Anyway, as for how I would learn it, well I guess first of all I would try and find a decent self-study course on the Internet. And as well as that, I suppose another thing I would do would be to look for a teacher, preferably a native speaker if possible, because I would then be able to get feedback on what I was doing right and wrong. And having a native speaker as my teacher I think would be extremely beneficial in terms of developing a good accent.

And regarding what equipment I would need to study French, well thinking about it, I suppose it would be more or less the same as what I’ve been using for learning English, so basically a laptop and mp4 player, with which I would be able to download various things like podcast and other learning materials onto.

So that’s probably how I would learn the language, and finally, with regard to what difficulties I think I might encounter, well firstly, I imagine I might have quite a bit of difficulty with the pronunciation, as it’s so different to Chinese. I mean, there are so many sounds in French which we don’t have in our language, so I’m sure it would take an extremely long time to speak it well. And besides the pronunciation, I guess it might also be pretty difficult mastering the grammar, simply because every language has its own set of grammar rules, and I’m sure French is no exception!

So yeah, I suppose that’s about it then. Thanks for listening!

Notes:
decent = good
more or less = 差不多
So yeah, I suppose that’s about it then = 所以嗯,差不多就这些吧

What the person looks like
And explain why you think the person is polite.

Ok, right then, well the person I’d like to talk to you about is a very good friend of mine called Matthew, the reason being that he must be one of the nicest and most polite people I know, which I’ll come to explain in a moment.

But firstly, as for how I know him, well we’ve basically known each other since middle school, because we were in the same class together, and we still see quite a lot of each other. You know, if I feel like going out and doing something, I normally give him a call and see if he’s free to meet up.

And moving on to why I think he’s so polite, well it’s basically because he’s just got really good manners. And just to give you an example, he always says thank you to people, even for the slightest thing. For instance, I’ve noticed that whenever we’re eating at a restaurant, he will thank the waiters and waitresses every time they bring a dish to the table. And another example would be that whenever he gets off a bus, he will always say thank you to the driver, which a lot of people probably think isn’t necessary, but I’m sure the bus drivers really appreciate it, as do the waiters and waitresses, because it’s not all that often they hear people thanking them!

So yeah, that’s basically why I’d say he’s such a polite person, and I’m just trying to think if there’s anything more to add, um……, oh yeah, and one other thing to mention would be that he’s always very complimentary to people. So what I mean is that he tends to always say nice things to people, for example he might make a comment about how nice someone’s looking, or how good their cooking is, which I know might be seen as being a bit um,…what’s the word……um… insincere, but I think he genuinely means what he says, at least most of the time anyway!

And I mean, I can’t remember a single time when he’s ever been rude or unpleasant to anyone, and I also can’t really imagine him being nasty to anyone either.

So yeah, that’s pretty much it then. Thanks for listening.

Notes:
…which I’ll come to explain in a moment = …我待一会儿就解释
he’s got really good manners = 他很有礼貌
And just to give you an example = 给你举个例子呢 (this is a set-phrase which is used a lot in English, and is normally used for when the example is quite long)
not all that often = 不是那么经常
I’m just trying to think if there’s anything more to add = 我在想还有没有什么可以补充的!
he’s always very complimentary to people = 他总是对人很恭维
he tends to always = 他一般总
which might be seen (by some) as being insincere = 可能会被别人看作是虚伪
he genuinely means what he says = 他是真的认为的
at least most of the time anyway = 反正大多数时候是这样 (this is a useful structure: at least……anyway 反正……是这样)
what’s the word = 哪个单词怎么说?!(卡住的时候,可以用这句话 you can use this phrase when you are trying to think of what word to use.自言自语的话, it’s best to try and keep talking, even when you are thinking!

Turning Down an Invitation
I’m afraid I can’t…
I’d love to but…
That sounds great but…
Disagreeing
I see what you’re saying, but I think…
You could be right, but don’t forget that…
Yes that’s true, but I’m not sure that…
Can I/Could I – Could I have a coxina please? Can I have a coke please?  Could I order please? Can you lend me ten dollars?
May I (used in more formal situations) – May I attend the meeting next week? May I join you for lunch?
I know many people but sadly not many of them are polite. I’d like to talk about my middle school science teacher, Mr Wang. He looks like a typical teacher who dresses neatly, wears very thick glasses and has messy hair. When people see him for the first time they usually have the impression that he gets angry easily and is quite mean. However, looks can be deceiving.

He is a teacher who is always polite and always has a smile on his face - although he has been my science teacher for 3 years, I have never seen him yell at any of my classmates or even raise his voice. Most teachers might talk to parents in a nice manner but treat students really poorly but not him. He treats us really well and sometimes even plays basketball with us.

I guess the reason he is polite is because he has lived over 10 years in Japan and has been influenced by some of there culture or it may be because he is still only a low level teacher. Some people change once they get power – like my Uncle. He used to be a nice person until he became a big boss of company.

Mr Wang is someone I look up to because he has a good personality and is polite. I hope to be like him one day.

Describe a leisure activity near the sea you like most.

Useful phrases:
Ok, well I’d say the activity I probably like most when I’m on the beach is…
beach volleyball / frisbee 飞碟 / making sand castles 建造沙堡/ simply just lying on a deck chair 躺椅and listening to the sound of the waves.

Unfortunately, I don’t (really) get that much of a chance to(我没有那么多机会) play it, because I live quite far from the coast.

…so I only get the chance to play/do it when I’m on holiday, which is probably only about once or twice a year (or something左右).

It would be nice to do it more often, but what with work and everything(但由于工作和种种原因), it’s just not possible.

(But anyway), as for who I play it with, well what normally happens is that I start playing with a few of my friends who are with me on holiday, and then other people at the beach see us and ask if they can join (in).
Or it’s the other way round, you know, I’ll see people playing and ask to join (in).

The reason I enjoy it so much is that it’s just so fun, especially jumping around in the sand,

…what (also) makes it fun is that It’s something that I normally don’t get the chance to do.

The other cool thing about it is that you can dive for the ball (鱼跃救球) and land softly in the sand, whereas而 if you tried doing that on a hard surface like concrete 混凝土, it would be extremely painful, as you can imagine! (就像你可以想象的!)

It’s also really good exercise, 这是很好的锻炼
and I always feel (absolutely) exhausted 累死了after playing it.

It’s also a good way to make friends, because as I mentioned just now, I often end up playing with other people on the beach……and afterwards we might hang out for a bit…

(口语救生圈)Actually, there are quite a lot of popular leisure activities people do near the sea, such as strolling along the beach, writing characters or drawing pictures on the sand, or playing beach volleyball. Lucky for me I grew up near the sea. When I was little, I could go there everyday with my playmates, doing all kinds of fun things. It was more like a large playground for us. There’s something I still like to do when I am at the beach in my hometown -digging into sand for shellfish such as clams. It is a very relaxing activity. Minimal thinking is required. All you need to do is keep digging slowly and gently. If you dig them with great strength, you would probably end up with lots of smashed shells. Each time I can bring home a little bucket of clams. It doesn't necessarily mean that I am very patient. I just love to spend hours doing things I like. And I bet few people wouldn't love digging clams as it is so easy and fulfilling. You can imagine how happy I am carrying so many clams home before sunset. Because of me, my family would have one more palatable dishon the table.
Strolling along the beach –stroll:walk somewhere in a slow relaxed way, 表示“漫步”. along 表示“沿着”,通常和表示细长条形状的名词同时使用,例如along the road/ river/ corridor 等。
Lucky for me –完整的表达是[It was] lucky for me [that] I grew up near the sea. Lucky for me 也可以改为Luckily for me.
End up with –to finish with the possession of someone or something or in the company of someone or something.译为以…为告终,指不好的结果。例如He tried hard but ended up with a poor grade. Careful or you will end up with Johnny for the weekend.区分end with 的用法,Her note ended with the words: ‘See you soon.’ End with 表示以…为结尾,中性含义。
a palatable / ˈpælətəbl/ dish –一道鲜美可口的菜肴

I like to play ring frisbee with my unicorn Mr Taps. It is great physical exercise. It is fun because when someone fails to catch the frisbee ring, it is so epic and dramatic, and it's sometime's funny. I like it because it's great exercise, and gets rid of stress, and makes me relax, and laugh. A great way to keep in shape and be more fit.

Describe a good parent you know.
You should say:
Who the parent is
How you know the parent
What the parent looks like
And explain why you think the parent is good.

Ok right then, well the parent I’d like to talk about is the mother of a good friend of mine, and the reason for choosing to talk about her is that my friend is always going on about how lucky he is to have such a nice mum. And from what I know about her, I’d say he’s absolutely right!

Anyway, as for how I know her, well it’s basically due to the fact that I went to the same middle school as her son. And because we became pretty good friends, we ended up seeing quite a lot of each other’s parents, especially during the holidays when we often went over to each other’s homes.

And regarding what his mother looks like, well interestingly enough, she actually looks pretty similar to my own mother, because they both have quite round faces and long wavy hair. Having said that though, I’ve noticed that my friend’s mother often ties her hair up in a bun, whereas my mother usually always keeps it down. And another thing to mention would be that whenever I see her, she always seems to be wearing red clothes of some sort, which I guess is probably because red suits her quite well.

But anyway, finally then, with regard to why I think she’s a good parent, well I’d say there are quite a few reasons, one of which would be that she’s always been very supportive to her son. And just to give you an example, when he was deciding what major to study at university, he ended up choosing music. And his mother gave him her full support, which is probably not what many other parents would have done, as music doesn’t really leave open a lot of career choices, if you know what I mean!

And I think it’s fair to say that nowadays, a lot of parents persuade their children to do things which they think are best for them, but my friend has said that his parents have never been like this with him, especially his mother. So I kind of get the impression that she’s never forced him to do anything against his will, and has always let him make his own decisions, which I think’s really great.

That’s about it then. Thanks for listening.

Notes:
my friend is always going on about  = my friend is always saying......
interestingly enough = 说起来有趣,......
he ended up choosing music = 他最后选了音乐
finally then = 最后呢,......
I think it’s fair to say that = I think it's true to say that......我觉得可以说......
So I kind of get the impression that = I get the feeling that......我有点感觉到......
