1 "We can usually learn much more from people whose views we share than from people whose views contradict our own; disagreement can cause stress and inhibit learning."
The speaker declares that we learn(+ much) 题目说的是much more from people who share similar ideas with us than who hold contradictory ideas, reasoning from that disagreement can lead to stress and inhibit learning. In terms of learning, in which we endeavor to gain as much knowledge as possible by all sorts of measures, I would claim that communication with people of different views is more helpful.
Admittedly, in some conditions to extreme, 这个限定不错 the process of communicating with people of opposite opinions might undermine the self-confidence or even give rise to a conflict. (例子)For instance, when a student frequently discovers that many others' answers to questions are merely agreed with, he/she may consequently feel too unconfident and despaired to communicate with others on the subjects. Similarly, if two conceited arguers hold contradictory views and would not compromise any bit, they might tend to quarrel rather than discuss in order that their own claims listened to and agreed with by others, and when finally one of them is acknowledged to be correct, the other, failing in maintaining self-importance, would hardly accept the “undesirable” result.
However, in most conditions, it is not disagreement but agreement that inhibits learning. On one hand, staying with people whose views are in accord with ours, we tend to be self-satisfied and not to attach enough importance to the shortcomings or even fallacies in our views. Secondly, with agreements all around, we could hardly be acquainted with more views that take root in different aspects, which might be of great significance in the process of complete learning, and would possibly slide into a situation of short sight or narrow vision. As Mark Twain ever said (and I paraphrase), “We like a man to come right out to say what he thinks, if we agree with him.” And the man we “like” is merely to assure our “justice” and raise our conceit, providing nothing new or helpful for our further study.
Moreover, in the connection with people of contradictory views, our learning process is actually improved. In the realm of law, the controversy of people with contradictory interests may lead to better acquaintance of the society for both sides. In the area of science, researchers with different opinions may quickly find out the truth by discussing and proving, which contributes not only to improve the knowledge and experience of the researchers but also to avoid serious mistakes caused by the fallacy of one side.
Furthermore, learning from people of contradictory views is more likely to stimulate our spirits and enthusiasm no matter what the ultimate result is. As in a controversy, both sides would endeavor to search evidence to confirm that they are on the right side and the contradictory others are on the wrong one. During this process, we would learn not only to consider from various facets of a certain matter but also to compromise when necessary. In the meantime, the truth would be clearer, As Montaigne, a famous French prose writer, noted that, the most universal quality is diversity; learning would be more effective and practical in a circumstance of various views.
To sum up, I insist that, in most conditions except some irrational ones, disagreement contributes more to the animation and quality of learning than agreements, and that communicating with people holding contradictory views is a better way to polish up our knowledge and cognition system. Accordingly, I can not agree with the speaker’s untenable statement.
