115. It is through the use of logic and of precise, careful measurement that we become aware of our progress. Without such tools, we have no reference points to indicate how far we have advanced or retreated.
Is it true that we cannot indicate how far we have advance or retreated without the help of logic and precise, careful measurement, as the speaker claims? I don't think so. In my belief, our advancement or retreat can both been indicated by the tools mentioned by the speaker and other methods, which I would discuss below.
Firstly, it is true that many of our advancements, especially those in the scientific areas, could be indicated by measurement and logic. We measure the length by using rulers and decimal system; the weigh could indicated by kilogram; when we want to know exactly how fast can we surf in the internet, maybe bytes are the most convincing data; when we make an appointment, how could we tell the other people where and when to meet? We might say:" 5 o'clock at my house." and this answer at least includes two kinds of information: time and location, which could be measured by watch, calendar, latitude and longitude. As the examples mentioned above, there are many aspects in our life that need measurements.
Secondly, many other advancements or retreat cannot be indicated by this method, and the humanities are the apt illustrations. When we want to know how much progress we have made in morality and humanity, maybe no one would consider of using tools such as rules and decimal system to measure the advancement, owing to that it is the progress up in the spiritual level rather than material level we have discussed above. For example, how could we indicate the improvement of humanity in the past century? Scientific tools won't give us the proper answer--- they could show us graphics and data, but those could do little, if ever, to help us build a clear image of this advancement. In fact, when we are asked of this question, the first thing comes into our minds would be that we haven't been in a global war for nearly 60 years and countries now would rather choose negotiation than fighting to settle a problem. Considering that, we know how we could explain this advancement. This example tells us that only by using methods in the spiritual level can there be the indication of spiritual improvement or retreat.
Moreover, while we are talking about how we could indicate the progress of something up in the spirit, I am not denying scientific tools as assistants could help us a lot. In fact, it would be much easier for us to get the conclusion of "we really make a progress in humanity in the past century" if we have some data, such as casualty in every battle and the loss of fortune during every war. By scrutinizing this information, maybe we could form and image in our heads that actually the loss decreases year by year, thus we could make our conclusion much easier and persuasive.
In sum, as the reason listed above, I believe both methods I mentioned would help us indicate how far we have advanced and retreated. As a matter of fact, by forming these methods as an organic whole rather than using them separated we can find a best indication of our improvement or retreat. |
