History teaches us only one thing: knowing about the past cannot help people to make important decisions today.
   The speaker alleges that knowing about the past cannot help people to make important decisions today. I cannot agree with the allegation completely. As today's world is so complex and different from the past, it is tempting to agree with that it is futile to refer to history when people make decisions today. However as nearly everything existing today are developed  or evolved from something in the past, it is very helpful for us to know the past when we make important decisions.
   To begin with, knowing the past can hlep us to capture the opportunities and make the right decisions in appropriate time and situation. All the consequences have their own causes. The triumph of great wars, the prosperity of some certain societies and the rapid development of arts and science in some certain eras, all of the great deeds in the past have their causes. If we study and analyze these great deeds carefully we can find out what factors contributed to them and which factor was the key one. As I stated above, nearly everything existing today are developed  or evolved from something in the past, there must be similarity between something today and something  in the past. For example, the triumph of wars need some necessary factors in common, no matter the wars with bows and arrays in the past or the wars with missiles today. Study and analysis the wars in the past can tell us what are the necessary factors that contribute to the triumph of war and which one plays the most important role. So the General with ample knowledge of history can perform better in modern wars. He could catch the pricious opportunities, utilize all the favorable factors and even create some necessary factors to win the war in the end.
   In addition, the study of the past can help us avoid making some mistakes that have been made before. Apart from the heroics, the history is also filled with mistakes and crimes which caused the failure of individual and sometimes the misfortunes of a nation and even the whole humankind and the nature.  Well study of history can prevent us from repeating these mistakes. Knowing something about Hitler can help a leader of a nation to make policies of the country not to aggress other nations and keep the peace of the world. The Watergate told us to be honest and never to hatch a plot for winning any kinds of game. The extinction of the bird Dodo warns us against destroying the evironment and the habitats of other livings on the earth. To some extent, well study of the mistakes in the history helps us more on making important decisions than the study of good deeds in the past because caution is more direct and obvious than inspiration and guidance.
   In sum, the speaker's claim is wrong and knowing the past can guide us to make the right choice. The human has attached importance to the study of history since thousands of years ago. In ancient China, nearly every emperor spent a lot of money on the edit, revise and study of history just because they knew that history  provided the only materials that they could consult when they made policies and helped them govern their countries. There is an old chinese saying: History is the mirror of today . It means history provides caution and guidance for us to perform well and avoid repeating the old mistakes. So it is not useless but very useful that knowing the past could be when we decisions today.

文章还算比较流畅，逻辑上也没什么问题，就是把内容尽量充实起来最好
