Does such non-mainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and the like sever as a significant role, which satisfies human needs that the mainstream science cannot meet. I concede the non-mainstream areas of inquiry can function as a psychological comfort. Yet they are just the supplement to the mainstream science. If we trust the non-mainstream areas of inquiry without a rational mind, they may be harmful for us, even cause some tragedies.

To begin with, it is such non-mainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and so forth, that help our humans to comfort ourselves, when we confront with some uncertainty, insecurity, and confusion. In psychology, human tends to like to live in a controllable situation, for instance, live with a stable career, a regular income, and a healthy body, etc. However, experience tells us that things are varying all the time, it is impossible for us to predict what will happen in the next minute. As a result, the need for life certainty, which the non-mainstream areas of inquiry like astrology, fortune-telling can provide, though there are few grounded evidence, makes the non-mainstream inquiry, to some extent, necessary in our societies. Thereby, in western societies, the tarot cards are prevailing, which help people to predict the future, while, in Eastern, people are in favor of the geomantic omen, with which the house is expected to benefit the host dramatically. With such non-mainstream knowledge, our uncertainty and insecurity about everyday life can, to some extent, be released, though it is groundless. In this sense, non-mainstream areas of inquiry play a role like lubricant in our societies.

However, once we are so addicted to non-mainstream areas that we treat every aspect of our lives by them without any rational consideration, the function of non-mainstream areas seems to be harmful to human. Common sense informs us that every matter, once we go to extreme, will cause numerous problems. Non-mainstream areas of inquiry are the same. There are myriad of examples to show this. For instance, in the distant village in China, lacking some basic knowledge about science, people there trust the so-called master thoroughly, actually a cheat, who claims he can expel the ghost to help people get rid of adversity and become luckier. As a result, a large amount of money, which is earned by the people with great hardness, is cheated by this guy. Such case, though not so serious, shows the danger of fully believing in non-mainstream inquiries. What is worse, the addict and fanaticism in such non-mainstream inquiries can sometimes leads to a tragedy, which can be shown by historical fact. Cult, the mysterious organization obeying some strange and inhumanity laws, has trigged several tragedies in the last century. For example, the group suicide took place in both U.S and Europe; and the worst, 12 people were killed, and more 5000 were injured by the poison in subway in Japan, which was done by a cult. Hence, the examples cited above prove that the irrational trust in the non-mainstream inquires will eventually cause some bad effect on human, even tragedy.

To sum up, it is true that the non-mainstream inquiries can function as a means of psychological therapies. However, if we believe them thoroughly without a scientific and reasoned mind, it is dangerous for us to be involved in them. Therefore, we should keep a conscious brain when we confront these non-mainstream inquiries.
