Issue 48: The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten

--正文—

:hug::hug::hug:
History is the collective memory of human actions and thoughts, historical study is the attempt to understand the interrelatedness of past events within this collective memory. To forget or ignore history is to develop a collective amnesia, for it is the recorded past which provides the ideals, the values, the experiences which give us something to live for. Though the study of history has been attached great importance to among people, however, there is still an entrenched bias that it places too much emphasis on individuals but leaves the anonymous groups of people who actually assume great efforts in prompting the development of the society abiding aside.

History, which is indeed the witness of the times as Cicero once described, is both the mirror of cultural and technological innovation and the magnificent endeavor of people’s contriving for the independence and dignity. Concerning these two facets, the study of history should be instructed accordingly to their distinct traits and characteristics.

Tracing back the history of cultural and technological innovations, you may find that it is usually propelled by the impetus and incentive of one savant’s effort and a small group of people’ dedications. For instance, Isodora Duncan, the American dancer, opened the era of impressive dancing style. Picasso created the cubism which incorporated the soul of painting and the theory of Geometry. The inventions of Thomas Edison have brought us to a brand-new brighter epoch. In light of these examples, we can easily see that it is often the individuals that undertake the huge load to pose boost to the development in the cultural and technological realms. Thus, on this account, we should give precedence to the great individuals in the study of the history associated with these fields.

With regard to the majestic history of the fighting for the people’s independence and dignity which is forged by the sweat and blood of those who guarded their holy nations and ethnics and those passionate peoples who dedicated themselves to the work behind the battle, we should attach greater emphasis on the mass anonymous heroes. The role of the generals like Eisenhower is crucial as what the encomium has repeated all the time, nonetheless, the subordinate anonymous soldiers who risked their lives in the bestial and brutal battlefields are as meritorious as the these prestigious leaders. They fought irrespective to their own interests and lives with the only comfort that their progenitors will remember what they had done to them and the nation. Viewing the current education and study of history, we have occasion to flush in front of these sublime braves.

As a source of inspiration and of indignation, a tapestry of human accomplishments and failures, history is not only the seminal story of victors, savants or generals, but also the volume of the anonymous heroes and the sacrifice of their families. Still today, it behooves us to continue drawing inspiration from them and carry on understanding history in terms of the influence of both them.
