Issue38 "In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn
as much by watching television as they can by reading books." (传媒)
看电视不能代替读书作为一个学习的方法
1。读书是一个主动的过程,在这方面它比电视更有用。
2。看电视只是被动的学习
3。看电视在获取信息上有优势。
In this modern world of the breathtaking speed of economical and technological development, television, once as a luxury, has now become more and more available in people's lives. Due to the existence of television, we have easier access to information, to events happened, and to wonderful talk shows. Attracted by the marvelous role that television has played, some people, the author included, claim that people can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books. This view, seems appealing at first glance, is not a solid one, since it curtly ignores the advantages of reading books over watching television and overemphasizes the importance of watching television.
To begin with, reading books requires the reader to be involved in a process to actively interact with the writers, which indeed is an indispensable means for learning knowledge. Let's bring the discussion to a more practical context. For instance, when learning mathematics, students might often come across problems or theories that are difficult to understand. In this case, they might stop
reading to think for a while, do some calculations, take notes, or possibly they need to go back a few pages or refer other books to search for the explanation. In this way, students may get to understand the method to tackle the problem and the reason behind, which means true comprehension. The active interaction also embraces imagination from the original literature book. By reading journals, one can savor the beauty from the lines of a poem, be absorbed by a inviting detective novel, or even put ourselves in the beautiful scenery that the written material presents. True, in this way, we can deeply learn the meaning of literature by fully interacting with the writer. Therefore, reading books, as a process of interaction, serves as an effective way of studying.
However, watching television would not turn out to be beneficial for learning knowledge since people tend to be imparted passively. As a matter of fact, the nature of television programs causes this phenomenon. TV programs would not explain every question that the audience may come up with from the content that it presents , or neither will they stop to let the audience think over the question for the answer. Gradually, people tend to give up the effort to think or to be critical and become more passive in being imparted of the scientific knowledge by the TV programs. Therefore, Watching television, unlike the speaker's assertion that highlights the significance of studying, just presents
another way of informing information rather than true education.
In the final analysis, it is should be pointed out that watching television could be able to replace the role of reading books when it comes to learning certain types of knowledge. For the purpose of conveying information of temporal, spatial events and experiences, the TV, more often than not, provides a more appealing and convincing record than the books do. For example, under today's
intensified media, an anti-war parade that happened on the other side of the planet could be concretely and amply broadcast in today's TV news. By watching TV, people could not only learn the basic information of the parade, but also be strongly touched by the facial expressions of those
participants and vigor of the event. As for these cases, reading books, therefore, may be inferior to watching TV in terms of efficiency and the ability to obtain accurate details of events.
From all the discussions above, it can be safely concluded that the speaker's assertion overstates the significance of watching TV. Although watching television might be advantageous over reading books in learning spatial and temporal events, reading books might be a more useful way for
studying knowledge than watching television. |
