What's the function of history study? The author claims that it lies on the extent of the relation to our daily lives. However, in my opinion, the study of history are valuable not for its direct effect on our lives, but the inspiration it brings about us, the understanding it help us attain. Even the outlook of history is not fascinating because we have to spend a lot on the preservation of our history and it might affect the normal life of us.

The first and foremost, history presents us with numerous heroes and emperors, who were inspiring enough for our endeavor and remained a model for the future generation leaders. Take the first Emperor Qin Chihuang for example. He was a contradicting figure as for one thing, he brought about the unification to China, which lasted for thousands of years; yet for another, he consolidated autocracy, which left behind rise-ups of peasants. The later historians depicted the Emperor in several historical works to later leaders to illustrate how to regulate the subjects efficiently. In this sense, the study of history does relate to our daily lives, but only indirectly most of this study affects the behavior and characters of the top leaders firstly.

In addition, the study of the society of ancient times helps us understand the circumstances and development of the world today. Since a early age, I wonder why Japan, Korea and China, however close they may be, are three distinctive nations. And why the Southern America has the same heritage of Spain and Portugal. Now, through the book introducing the history of the communication between these countries, I know that since the ancient time, people have communicated frequently across the oceans and seas. As a result, I learn how to understand and tolerant different perspectives of different nations and regions as they indeed have their cherished history and traditions. In other words, the study of history clarifies the mysteries of the world and helps build a society of harmony and communication.

Last but not the least, although from someone's view, the study of history is neither interesting nor worth the labor as historians have to use my intricate modern technologies such as astronomy and archeology devices to excavate and preserve the pieces of porcelains or silks of the ancient time, which is definitely costly and troublesome; yet the value of history is so huge that they can not be perceived or evaluated in one generation or another. We can find many collectors gain a profit through their collecting, but we are not aware of the hard work they devote to finding and distinguishing the collections. In the sense of preserving the history, it sometimes is inconvenient in our daily life. If we determine the study of history by the extent of the relationship to our daily life, then at least a large part of the study will by curtailed.

All in all, the study of history is inspiring for our leadership and helps us understand more about the world around us. And most of the time, the outlook of history has nothing to do with our daily lives, although we still have to devote to preserving the trace and information of our ancestor.
