ISSUE 120 - " So much is new and complex today that looking back for an understanding of the past provides little guidance for living in the present."

提纲:
1.让步:的确有很多以前没有的新问题出现
2.但历史告诉我们社会发展的趋势从而帮助我们解决问题
3.历史还为为我们解决立足在人性根本上的问题

Does looking back for the history useful for the present living in the modern society? My answer is sure. I concede that there are a lot of new and complicated problems today, however, learning the past helps us understand the trend of the society, and provide hints for today's problems.

Admittedly, there are many new and complex situations that our forerunners did meet. As the speedily development of the industry and science, so much new happened in our society. These problems are so modern that we could hardly find a track from past. For instance, the media lead to the problem of information overload; the improvement of internet brought the new criminals--- hackers; as well as bringing the huge number of energy; the usage of the nuclear energy causes the problem of leaking risk, and the development of clone technology leads to the argument about science and morality. These problems are new and have never happened before, even people who with the longest vision did not leave messages to tell us how to deal with them. And they are more complicated than ever: they always need the knowledge of various areas and all human being's efforts to figure them out --- if they could be. Facing all those problems, there is no denying that past experiences cannot provide us proper solutions; but, does this euqal to that there is absolutely no need to look back to the past?

The answer is definitely no, because looking back to the previous time could help people know the trend of social development, which prevent us to run in the incorrect direction. Although so many new and detailed problems happened in all the fields of the society, the main trend of it does not change. Learning the history make our direction clear. Looking back to the previous time, we see a trail of development of human society: from the autarchy to the democracy. Without this idea, we experience failure. The Soviet Russia's abruption and the change of the east Europe told us that society would not go back to autarchy, and despotism would not work. Understanding those past events, holding this conception, people would not walk in the wrong road to adverse the society's trend. Moreover, this kind of idea could not only help us deal with the macro-problems, some smaller problems could be settled by it. One of the problems of the internet is the huge amount of misleading information, which is against the government. The democracy trend of society tells us that simply stopping them is unreasonable: Everyone has the democratic right to publish information, so holding the idea, civilized countries using regulations to protect their rights, and resist them in particular ranges to prevent them to threat the society by means of laws at the same time. Such benefits mentioned aboved can all be attributed to the experiences provided by the history.

Furthermore, besides showing us the trends of the development of the human society, history may even supplies some essential points under the various and intricate phenomena. Human beings experienced fast progress of knowledge, but we have undergone no general development in human nature. The disadvantages in our blood and bones such as greed, laziness and violence do not change at all. Thus in the level of human nature, the history could help us to settle problems. Take war for example, no matter how developed humans' weapons are, the reason of war is humans' greedy and violence. From the wars of BC, to the twice world wars, leaders were aiming to match their needs of conquest. And the history tells us that wars would lead to a huge amount of lost in human lives and social capitals for both the victors and losers. Understanding this point, people prize peace now. Although the nature of people does not change, they get useful experience and hints from the past, and prevent to negatively affected by the natures. Therefore, history helps human being improve the society and modern lives more carefully by providing essential tips.

In conclusion, understanding of the past guides present people to solve, if not all, the problems today, and point out the right direction for people. Therefore, everyone, from the leaders in all the realms to the common citizens, should learn the history and will undoubtedly gain much from it.
