Admission Application Checklist

Graduate Admissions Application: We prefer that you submit your application online. Alternatively, you may submit the paper application.
Apply Online or download the Paper Application (PDF).
Application Fee, $50 (waived for students who apply online or submit the application during a campus visit)
Essay: Applicants are required to submit an essay explaining why you are interested in pursuing graduate study. Refer to the Program Requirements and Deadlines for your program's specific essay topics and requirements, if applicable, before writing the essay.

Letters of Recommendation: Refer to the Program Requirements and Deadlines for the number of recommendations that you are required to submit for your program. Recommendation letters must include the address, phone number, and signature of the recommender. The recommendation envelope must be submitted unopened to the Office of Graduate Admissions.
Standardized Test Scores: The GRE is required for students applying for full-time status (9 credits per quarter). Official copies of test results must be sent to Drexel. Refer to the Program Requirements and Deadlines to determine which tests you are required to take. Drexel's test code is 2194.
TOEFL: (international students only) Applicants who have not received a degree in the United States are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). An official score report must be sent directly from the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Drexel's institutional test code is 2194 and the department code is 0000.
Résumé: Required for all programs
I-20/DS-2019 and Supporting Financial Documents: (international students only) Please print and complete the I-20/DS-2019 Application Form (PDF) and submit it with your supplemental materials.

Transcripts: Official transcripts must be sent directly to Drexel from all the colleges/universities that you have attended. Transcripts must be submitted in a sealed envelope with the college/university seal over the flap.
International Student Transcripts:
All transcripts and mark sheets must be sent to Drexel University in a sealed envelope from the issuing institution. Please refer to the documentation requirements for the country in which the university or college you attended, or are currently attending, is located. Transcripts must be in English and include course names and grades. World Education Services is recognized for obtaining and transcribing your transcripts and documents for academic review and consideration.
High School (Secondary School) transcripts are not required.
Official or Attested Conferment of Degree.
Transcripts from most international colleges do not adequately indicate the degree awarded as compared to U.S. transcripts.
Thus, separate Conferment of Degree is required, and must also be translated to English.
Two (2) Letters of Recommendation.
Recommendations should come from someone capable of judging your ability to do graduate level study.
This includes former professors, employers and/or supervisors.

Application Process and Forms
All applications to the Civil Engineering Graduate Program are submitted directly to the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the address in the side bar. The civil engineering programs admit students in the fall, spring, and summer semesters. Applications from students requesting funding are due by February 1 for fall admission.
Upon receipt of all of the applicable information listed below, applicants will be informed by mail that their admission package is complete, and their file will be evaluated. If the Committee and the Associate Dean for Engineering Graduate Studies approve, admission will be offered.
The following links will allow you to download the required application materials.
Materials required from all students:
1.    Official UH application form
2.    Completed Prospective Student Information Form. (PDF, Word) (Attach unofficial copy of transcript and GRE scores if available)
3.    The Privacy Rights Form (must be signed). (PDF, Word)
4.    Application fee. $25 US students, $75 International. This fee cannot be waived, and must be paid as
o     a personal check drawn on US Bank,
o     a cashier's check,
o     on line using a credit card, or
o     a money order.
No action will be taken on your application until this fee is received.
5.    Official GRE Scores from Educational Testing Services (ETS). Only the general test including verbal, quantitative, and analytical sections is required.
6.    One Official Transcript from all Colleges and Universities attended. Minimum acceptable GPA is 3.0/4.0 ("B") on last 60 hours attempted; higher grades are expected in graduate courses. Applicants from India must submit individual mark sheets for each year of study.
7.    Three separate letters of reference. These must be sent directly to us from the person making the recommendation.
8.    Photocopy of the Diploma(s) you received, showing the date you received the Degree(s), the type of Degree(s) you received and from what Institution(s). Not required if you are graduating near or after the admission deadline.

Application: If you are completing the paper application be sure that you type or print clearly. Applicants may be considered for admission to master's or doctoral degree programs if they have attained the baccalaureate degree at an American college or university, or possess an equivalent degree "Equivalent" means four years of University undergraduate work, preceded by at least 12 years of elementary and secondary school studies. Most foreign four-year degrees are recognized as being equivalent; however, the three-year Indian Bachelor of Arts, Science, and Commerce degrees and other three-year Asian degrees are not considered to be equivalent.
Application Fee: For international applicants, the application fee is $65. The fee is non-refundable and can not be deferred or waived. This fee can be paid by check drawn on a U.S. bank or paid by credit card, (MasterCard or VISA only).
Personal Statement: Begin the Personal Statement or Statement of Purpose on the second page of the Application and continue it onto subsequent pages, if necessary. One can also print their entire Statement on separate sheets of paper, there by, allowing the applicant to use word processing packages in preparation of the document. Be sure that your name appears at the beginning along with the name of your desired program. If you are completeing the on-line application, you have the option of submitting your Personal Statement at that time or mailing it via surface mail within two days of the electronic submission of the application.
Transcripts: Two copies of official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended, undergraduate and graduate, where 6 or more credits were taken are required. We would prefer them submitted in sealed envelopes submitted with the application but will accept them mailed directly from the college/university. If the official transcripts and/or degree certificate(s) are not in English, notorized English language translations in duplicate must be submitted. Do not list colleges/universities where 5 or fewer credits were taken.
Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Tests: Official score reports must come directly from the Educational Testing Service (ETS). The Institutional Code for the University of Massachusetts Amherst is 3917. Most graduate programs require the GRE General Test and a few require a Subject Test in addition to the General Test. Click here for those requirements. Test scores are valid for five years from the date of anticipated entrance.
Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT): All applicants to Management; Hotel, Restaurant and Travel Administration; and Sport Studies must submit an official copy of their GMAT scores. The institutional code for the University of Massachusetts Amherst is 3917. GMAT scores are valid for five years from date of anticipated entrance.
Letters of Recommendation: A minimum of two (Psychology and Sociology require three) letters of recommendation are required from individuals best suited to assess the applicant’s quality of academic performance and ability to perform scholarly research. Although the use of our Recommendation Form is not required, we do however, ask that the applicant complete the top portion of the form and give it to the referee. All recommendations will be considered non-confidential unless the applicant waives his/her right of access.
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): Since all students are expected to read, understand, speak and write English fluently, all applicants whose native language is not English must demonstrate English language proficiency by taking the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and achieving a score of 550 or above. Applicants taking the computer-based TOEFL must score 213 or above. A TOEFL score is valid for two years from expected entrance date.
The Institution Code for the University of Massachusetts Amherst is 3917.
TOEFL is not required if an applicant satisfies one or more of these conditions:
a. Citizenship of Australia, Canada, Great Britain, Guyana, Ireland, New Zealand, United States, an Anglophone country of Africa, or an English speaking country of the Caribbean. b. A college or university degree earned in the United States or in one of the countries listed above. c. A degree earned from the American University in Beirut, American University in Bulgaria, American College in Greece or from Bogazigi University. d. Current enrollment as a full-time student who will have completed two academic years of college/university work in the United States prior to the date of anticipated entrance at the University of Massachusetts.
International Student Financial Statement:Every international applicant must complete this form and submit it along with the application. The information contained in this statement will be used to determine if the University will be able to provide you with a visa scholarship if you are eventually offered admission.
