ARGUMENT142 第六期同主题
TOPIC: ARGUMENT142 - The article entitled 'Eating Iron' in last month's issue of Eating for Health
reported that a recent study found a correlation between high levels of iron in the diet and an
increased risk of heart disease. Further, it is well established that there is a link between large amounts
of red meat in the diet and heart disease, and red meat is high in iron. On the basis of the study and
the well-established link between red meat and heart disease, we can conclude that the correlation
between high iron levels and heart disease, then, is most probably a function of the correlation
between red meat and heart disease.

提纲:
1.攻击red meat不是导致心脏病的原因。
2. 即使red meat是原因,也不一定是含铁高造成的
3.即使也是因为含铁高造成的,也不能说明铁导致心脏病是由于red meat引发心脏病的作用
Merely based on the unfounded assumption and dubious evidence, the statement draws the conclusion that red meat is the most probable reason for the heart disease. To substatiat this conclusion, the author points out the evidence that iron is at a high level in red meat, furthermore,he indicates that high levels of iron relates to the risk of heart disease. At first glance, the argument appears to be somewhat convincing, but further reflection reveals that it neglects certain essential information that should be addressed in the statement. In my point of view, the argument suffers from several logical flaws.
First of all, the arguer falsely establish a correlation between red meat and heart disease. People may eat red meat in varieties of ways, just like, spoiling, frying, roasting, ect. Accoding to a recent survey introducted by Harbin University, the chance that individuals who eat red meat with more oil get heart dieases is 10.87% higher than those who eat it more blandly. Thus, we can see that may be it is the oil causing the heart disease, not the red meat itself. That is to say, it is the way how people eat red meat may lead to the disease, not because large amounts of red meat is contained in the diet.
In addtion, though it is true that large amounts of red meat in the diet can cause heart disease, is it just because the iron is high in it? As it is known to all, besides iron, red meat also contains a high level of cholesterol. It is so difficult to be digested that it may need more oxygen to help releasing energy, and thus exacerbate heart's burden, making people more easily to get heart disease. That is only one possibility, and red meat contains much more elements, and each could be the reason for the disease.Furthermore, one kind of healthy vegetable---bean,contains more iron, but it is hard for human beings to absort. Similarly in red meat, probably absorbing iron from red meat is also hard for our bodys.
Finally, althought I concede with the author that red meat can cause heart disease and iron also can cause heart disease, the latter must result from the former? According to this argument, no evidence demonstrates that iron mentioned in the article comes from red meat. How many people eat red meat ? How many people eat iron? And how many people get heart attack? Does those people who get heart disease all because they eat red meat or iron? The argument does not give any instructions of these question, so we can not draw the conclusion so hastedly that the correlation between high iron levels and heart disease is most probably a function of the correlation between red meat and heart disease.
As it stands, the argument is not well reasoned. To strengthen the statement, the author has to provide more information about the group of people in study and other possible dangerous factors of red meat causing heat disease. Therefore, only with these convincing support, would the argument become more than just an emmotinal appeal.
