138. "Only through mistakes can there be discovery or progress."
TOPIC: ISSUE138 - "Only through mistakes can there be discovery or progress."

I disagree with the idea that only through mistake can there be discovery or progress from some points. I think the speaker assumes that the mistake is the way through which we can discovery and progress. In fact, we should avoid the mistakes in our work and study, if not; they would delay our progress and even destroy the program.

People think that mistakes can produce discovery and progress in that they assumes that from mistakes we can learn that why we are error and avoid the same mistake again. But the controversial situations always exist in our live, which is although we took mistakes, we still not take attention on it until that cannot be revised again. It likes a saying that eat the one hundred beans, but unknown the taste of beans as well. For example, when I was in my high school, I was a genius student who liked by all my teachers. But I was so careless in my homework, which caused lot of mistake in them. The mistakes can not call my attention on them; I was only thought that only because my carelessness and I understood how to get the right answers in fact. Because of that thought, there were more and more mistakes appeared in my homework. Finally in some one important exam, I was not past it ultimately, which made me realized the mistakes that I was not took attention in my homework caused it eventually. Thus, mistakes themselves cannot make discovery. If people who make the mistake do not learn from it, it cannot there be discovery and progress but more mistake.
And the second assume is that the mistakes can be changed and there are changes to learn from the mistakes. But in the real world, there are lot mistakes that make serious results which delay the progress of society and even destroy the future of one people forever. For example, the paper reported a disaster that there was a newly established building collapse. The reason is because a mistake in the blueprint that not found by the building engineer. Because the serious result of that case, the engineer was set to prison by law and told not to work as the building engineer again. Thus, the mistake is not let the engineer learn from it but also cause the lost of life and wealth that is not return and the engineer also never allow to work as building engineer again. Such mistake that product the serious result must be prevented than allow it happened in the name of discovery and progress.

Admittedly, we all are not the gods but only the ordinary people. As ordinary people, we cannot avoid mistake in every thing and in every time, but we can guard again it from the small things that happened in our life, and the same time to form the habits that prudent and modest to prevent that potential mistake happened. In the elementary school, there is a teacher of my friend, required strictly to his students that not allowed they to make the mistakes three time in one homework, the students include my friends were very repulsed the teacher because they always need the more time to do his homework than other teachers’. But after them grown, they find the benefit of that they are more caution when doing works; they make the less mistake than the other people. So, their works are more effective. We are not the gods that cannot make mistake, but we can make the fewer mistakes in any endeavor.
