TOPIC: ISSUE147 - "Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them."
WORDS: 610          TIME: 00:45:00+20          DATE: 2007-7-23 20:42:35

In this issue, the author asserts that people should choose only either tradition or modernization in two of them, since they are incompatible. However, I do not agree with the author. In my observation, tradition and modernization are closely connected and their combinations can be more frequently appeared and own a large amount of merits. Such point can be well reflected in the realm of science and arts.

In the realm of science, tradition and modernization are tightly linked and the synergetic effects of them far overweigh the contributions of either of them. On the one hand, tradition is the basis for the modernization .It provides the framework within which modernization develops. Take the subject of physics as an example. For hundreds of years, people have been viewing the Newton's Law of Motion as classic and traditional. Nevertheless, almost every modern theories and hypothesis were built on the basis of this law because it concerns the basic rules of the motion of macro objects. Any further researches of physics are inevitably tied with the motions of objects, thus need this traditional laws to offer the foundation for deeper studies. Thereby, the science are able to head forward to be more advanced. On the other hand, the traditional methods are advantageous in their own aspects. To manipulate those merits together with modern techniques, scientific experiments and researches can be much more conveniently operated and undertaken. For instance, in the preparation of a certain chemical, various methods and equipments will be adopted. Traditional methods and modern methods can be exploited accordingly. When scientists need the accurate weight and attributes of specimen, modern methods and equipments are required to attain this information even though those modern approaches maybe difficult to grasp and apparatuses can be exceedingly expensive. Yet, when sometimes rough information about the specimen is enough, traditional means and equipments can be adopted and they are usually readily operated and the apparatuses are inexpensive. In sum, the combination of tradition and modernization can assist the development of science and make scientific researches easier.

In the realm of arts, the combinations of tradition and modernization bring more benefits to arts. For one thing, modernization facilitates the creation traditional arts. To support this view, we should look no further than the relationship of computer and different artists. A painter nowadays can use computer to draw a traditional painting. With the help of pictorial softwares such as Photoshop, painters can make further subtle retouches in their work, making their paintings more vivid. A musician also use computer to write classic songs. Computer enables musician to record their songs and then replay them, benefiting the further modifications. An architect has to use computer and certain software like auto-cad to draw the blue print and  sketches of a
structurally complex mediaeval church. All the content or style of the art works maybe traditional. However, modern technology assists their accomplishments. For another, the mixture of tradition and modernization sometimes make art works more appealing. For instance, in recent years, we witness the advent of several genres of music, which is consisted of both traditional and modern elements. Many songs of Chinese pop stars such as Jay Chou, Li Hong Wang and David Tao are mingled with the traditional Pecking operas, modern R and B and hip-hop styles. Those songs combined with tradition and modern components turn out to be the most popular ones among all their music. To summarize, the mixture of tradition and modernization is beneficial to the creation and popularity of art.

In conclusion, tradition and modernization are compatible. Combined with the merits of both tradition and modernizaiotn, their conjunction is more favorable in many realms.

中间两个大段貌似可以分成四小段更好一点,算了懒得分了,估计上了考场也没时间想分段的事了。
